Adding Dual Alternators

Does anyone know how hard or if even possible to add a second alternator to a 2017 L5P? Factory alternator is 150 amps, but I would like to add a 220 amp. Can you buy the alternator and wiring harness and new belt?

Should be able to.

The optional 220A alternator is:
KW5 Alternator, 220 amps

Some on lots 'here' have that option added.

And factory dual alternators is:
KHB Alternators, dual, 150 amps and 220 amps each

They gotta have parts available for service and/or crash usage.

(duals are only available with the duramax)

I asked a dealer and he said only way to get duals was to factory order, but I can't imagine a separate wiring harness just for dual alternators. I am thinking about adding a 16.5 electric winch and 150 amps isn't enough to keep up. Duals would be the way to go. I installed a 200 amp on my 02 and my 12k winch made it get very hot, then I switched to a hydraulic winch.

Sales dept? or parts/service?

I asked the salesman, and he said he had asked the service department for another customer. Not that I trust a salesman:HiHi: The link above shows dual alternators for gas engines, so they might have what it takes to install on the diesel also.

I'll check with the GM dealer I use, later this week.

They do enough truck mods for customers that I expect they will know about this issue.

I might just add a high amperage single like the 260 amp that Nations has. I emailed them, so we will see what the choices are. I ordered a new 18k electric winch, so I prefer to have some extra charging so that the batteries don't go in the hole quite as fast.

Go with the single 260. Adding duals will add obviously the alt. then brackets, then a parallel harness. Doubt you get a good discount on those parts so then the 260 is cheaper and then you don't have to alts in your way down the road when servicing the truck.

I do know that class 8 trucks that use dual alternators have a specific "leader" and a "follower" along with the electronics to make them work together. I would look towards the upgraded single for simplicity.
