New 2019s or 2020s have fewer emissions problems?

I have a 2011 3500 dually which has had no mechanical issues but has been a constant PIA with codes for NOx sensors, glow plugs, reluctant quality, def tank heater, etc many of them multiple times. I have not been able to enjoy my truck because of the constant fear of CEL coming on during a long trip. My extended 10 year emissions warranty will be up next year. My question is do the new trucks have problems with emissions largely corrected or is it still a gamble? My truck was the first year for def so I assume we were used as guinea pigs and hopefully many of the early issues have been corrected. I love the power and economy but canít stand the uncertainty of being able to drive long distances without the fear of CEL interrupting the trip. Should I trade for a new 19 or 20 Duramax or forget it and go with gas? Also worried about the fuel pump grenading as many have reported.

If you don’t need a diesel I wouldn’t own one for all the things you have listed and then some. There very expensive to maintain. But some just need them for the cool factor and you can tell that nothing has ever been hitched up to it.
Since you have a Dually I presume you need a high payload. Don’t know where home is but maybe you only need a 6.6L V8 Gas engine and no more worries.
The newer trucks have so much electronics going on. One thing I’m not a fan on is the push button e-brake. I needed the hand e-brake when my brake lines sprung a leak from being rusted. Don’t know how I would get Home with the new setup. Most likely a tow truck.
Just think how much money you could save also.

As said, if you need a truck to get work done and you need a diesel, go buy one. Worrying about possible problems won’t do anything for you. You could get one with zero issues for many years, or one that has some issues, but again, talking about it and worrying about it isn’t going to change a thing. What kind of weight are you hauling and towing? How often?

'17 and forward engine is designated L5P instead of LML.

One of the changes is the high pressure pump.
It is built and supplied by a different manufacturer.



A later LML is less likely to have emissions issues than an '11.

Imho, if the emissions on the LML had performed as well from the beginning as the L5P seem to, we wouldn't be worried about them at all used in stock form (which is probably most trucks).

Reliable or not, the tuner/hotrod/enthusiast community would still be removing/modifying -- just like what happens in the gas engine world.


EDIT to add:
2011 model year was an all new chassis - frame , suspension, brakes, front end, transmission update -- and of course the LML; all with the same body/cab as the 2007.5 thru 2010.

The L5P was introduced for the 2017 model year.
The 2020's have the all new body style, but they also have all new chassis.
Although the 2020 engine is still the L5P, it has a bunch of updates made in support of the increased tow ratings (primarily cooling system).

Just trying to say that if looking at a '19 vs '20, the differences are more than the body style changes.

I had a new 19 for a while. Took about 10,000 miles to start getting good fuel economy but till the day I sold it it drank def fluid.

I am too early in my ownership of a 2019 to give an opinion if you should be concerned on the 19’s and 20’s but was in a very similar situation as you.

I owned a 2014 ram dually and had constant DEF injector issues. I did not drop it entirely because of that but it played a factor. I bought and 09 Chev LTZ to replace, worked it well but maintained it and had no issues. Friend had a 2018 and owned a 2016 before that and I ended up on a longer trip with him and liked it. Got to talking and he had no issues with 40k on it. Started researching and there are reports of issues but seem less than the 2010 to 2014 model years. Looked at what I would get for my 09 and this was a strong tell, I could get more for my 09 with 300k than someone with a 2011 could for theirs.

Now after all of that I did decide to move on, based it on the experience had my friends and neighbours. With that said I had an injector fail in the first 1000 miles lol but no issues since. Still very early but I like the truck.
