2002 LB7 Glow Plug Circuit

Hello
New this forum and have been searching for info on this topic, I read somewhere that the glow plug relay is rated at 70 Amps but others have said the circuit draws 100 Amps, another poster says his new glow plug measures 1.2 ohm's, at 1.2 ohm's the circuit should draw 80 amps? the reason I ask is I'm trying to replace the relay and refuse to pay over $200.00! for the relay from the dealer. Living in Canada I don't have easy access to the suppliers across the border (seems to be limited sources locally for this part) I have found one relay locally but its only 50 Amps.
If anyone can confirm the current rating for this relay that would be great, and if anyone has information about where to get the correct part at a reasonable price, I would appreciate it.

Also does anyone know the current draw of the IAH, I was thinking its draws less current and could swap around the relays? but I don't want to kill the batteries or destroy the IAH with a stuck relay.

TIA
Rob

Have you checked RockAuto? Standard Products RY585 (whole module) or Airtex 1R2078 (relay) and both far less than $200, including shipping.

Thanks for the info, but the rock auto part comes up to almost $150.00 with 12 day shipping and I will still have to pay duty and taxes?
Seems like a lot of money for a single relay?

We usually get Sr$%#$$$ed when ordering parts from the US
I will have a closer look at their site to see if I can determine their customs and duty charges.

When I selected "canada" and inputted a postal code for Vancouver, it didnt list duty or taxes, but you are right....those can get expensive. Sorry about that.

No worries

We have to be careful up here, I got burned once by UPS, the guys standing at my door with a $30 part and a $50 brokerage fee!!!
Looks like I'll be ordering from Rockauto after all, can't seem to find any Canadian suppliers with this part! and there much cheaper then the dealer.

Are you sure there arent any Dmax performance shops you can call that might have a spare part sitting on the shelf collecting dust? I inputted "Diesel Performance Shop Canada" into google and got a lot of hits in the Vancouver area alone. Might be worth a try tomorrow.

The stock relay is a 100 amp relay, but uses a 70 amp relay socket. Wit hthat said, I've been running a 70 amp relay in mine for 6 years now, and it's still going. As to current draw of the plugs, it is roughly 15 amps per plug, but I measured 115 amps total on mine for the first few seconds they are on(current drain drops off as the plugs heat up as they are self regualting plugs). For the short duration use, even if I have to put a new glow plug relay in every 3 years, it's still cheaper than a new controller.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, great forum!
I decided to order the Rockauto relay control for now (don't have time to dig into this right now) the parts on its way and Rockauto is very reasonable! the price did include duty and taxes! the truck starts just fine in our climate so I'll wait the 10 days.
I will have a spare relay and housing and will track down the ford part or the Napa 70 Amp relay for future repairs.
Thanks TheBac for the help, and THEFERMANATOR for the heads up on current ratings and longevity of the 70 Amp relay.

Cheers
Rob
