How many are there? What kind of problems besides injectors have you had (front end, tranny, 4x4 system)?


I am debating whether to keep my dmax for a while or get rid of it before things start going wrong later down the road. Please specify if you have driven them hard, raced, pulled (competition).


I also wouldn't mind getting rid of mine and getting a cheaper higher mileage one but I'm worried about there durability. Thanks for any input.

turboost, the range of longevity and problematic Duramaxs is wide and if you take the time to go through this b-board you can get details. But remember while reading the posts, they represent only a small, small percentage of owners. In the end you'll find out satisfaction rates are high and keeping your current HD/D-Max is the way to go.

65,000 and no problems yet. And I would expect nothing less from a $33,000 truck.


But these trucks do have a fuel filtration problem, and I do believe that this problem is the root to many of the injector problems.


For the most part the fuel I buy is clean, at least down to about 5-7 micron. The factory fuel filter is still in good condition at 20,000 miles. (about 5/8 used up at that point) but the Racor 60 series 2 micron post fuel filter is used up completely at about 10,000 miles. It is very apparent that a great deal of small particles is getting past the factory filter. (I do not know how small, maybe 7 micron. I would hope it is not larger then that size)

75,000 miles, just had to replace a seal on the drivers side of the front differential. Had them change the bearing while they were in there... $270. Otherwise, she's been problem free and like hdmax said, what else would you expect from a $30,000+ truck. With the extended warranty on the injectors I just figure on being without my truck for a little while sometime down the road but then it SHOULD be good to go!

i can't speak for my truck before 100000 but it now has 109 and i have already had to replace the hydro-boost unit. luckily the parts guy at chevy is an old friend so he gave it to me for wholesale still 415.00 after tax. hoping i didn't buy a piece of crap that i am going to be working on all the time.

I have 117,000 miles on my '02 and most of that is towing about 8000 lbs. cross-country. I'm very happy with my truck and hope to get many more miles out of it. I have had a few problems, but I still think this is an excellent truck. The problems I've had include:


1) 3 bad injectors - all 8 were replaced about 9000 miles ago under the extended GM warranty.


2) I have a dually and the brake pads seem to last forever. Unfortunately, it's at the expense of some very expensive rotors. I had to replace all four rotors and pads.


3) My air conditioner is currently acting up (goes hot and cold arbitrarily, even after recharging). The dealer says it's working according to spec, I say BS.


I've had Edge Products' Juice on my truck almost since day one and it really wakes the truck up. I haven't had any adverse affects from it and couldn't imagine driving without it. Actually, I recently took it off to get the upgrade with Attitude and it almost killed me to drive around the country without it.

I have 99,000 miles on mine. Had all eight injectors replaced at 75,00. Put Nicktane secondary fuel filter on at that point, and so far so good. I couldn't be happier with the truck. Any brand truck you get is going to have it's own set of problems. It's damned if you do damned if you don't no matter which way you go. I'm sticking with the Dmax.

I keep reading all of these different "problems" people seem to have and as hdmax said the only major problem seems to be with the fuel system filtering properly. It sounds like GM is trying to correct this problem by giving the extended warranty on the injectors.

I have never used fuel additives, and have no intentions of ever using them, as I feel that they are all snake oil. Proper fuel filtration is by far the most important part with our trucks fuel systems.

Actually, the most important thing about the fuel is lubrication - filtration is a close second. Fuel additives for gassers, I agree, are snake oils. Very different story in diesels though. As the forumlations each year reduce sulfur in US diesel, the fuel becomes less and less lubricating on your injectors and pump (more important on mechanical or electro-mechanical pumps than commonrail IMHO). I've made my VP44 pump, a supposedly "bad" one from 1998, last 260,000 miles by running additives... almost no one that I know of has an early VP pump that has lasted that long, I attribute it to additives and warmup habits...
