How do I prime my 03 Duramax (New to Duramax)

Hello Guys, bought my first duramax !

it was bought out of town and by the time it got to me on a transport truck it drove off the truck but had almost no fuel and 2 minutes later it died.

We got some diesel in it but now it wont start.

It cranks but wont start.

I did a little research here online ... and came to find out that there is a prime pump on the passenger side of the motor... i do see it in the engine compartment... but I would like to know how exactly should i prime the system... should i just start pumping it till it gets hard and i cant pump any more? what about the screw on the pump what is the purpose of that? should i unscrew it first or later after it is pumped?

I am very new to the duramax and detailed instructions would really help me..... thanks guys

it is a 2003 Duramax Ex Cab Automatic 4X2

Is there any website that can show detailed pictures on this process... Thanks again.

If you have found the primer assembly located just above the fuel filter, its very easy after that. There is a small black hex head screw with a screwdriver slot in it, find a screwdriver or 13mm socket and loosen this about 1 - 1-1/2 turns. After that, press on the primer, its the round "button" about 1 3/4" diam. Repeatedly press on this and release until you get fuel from the primer screw, you should hear a small hiss everytime as well, if you dont, loosen the screw just a bit more, but be careful not to loose it. Once you get fuel coming out, tighten the screw back up and then give it another 10 hits on the primer. It should firm up and you will be good to go.

Start reading about filter life and lift pumps, could save you lots of fustraiton in the future. With the dmax it helps to have a lift pump and do regular service to your filters

It could be you need to rebuild the filter head. It is simple and inexpensive. There are utube videos showing the process
