Dean's Off Road 6.5 Build

I stumbled across all of the great information on the 6.5 that this forum has to offer and that got me inspired to start my own build thread here. There are alot of firsts with this truck for me. My first diesel, first Chevy and first full size truck. My last 2 off road builds were a 95 Isuzu Trooper and a 2014 Nissan Frontier. The frontier really struggled with providing the towing that I needed so that is why I bought this 98 K2500 6.5 Turbo Diesel. Its an extended cab and long bed which makes it less ideal for break over angle but I plan to improve that. It has only 86K miles, manual transmission and its a Cheyenne model so its very basic.

My hopes are to get it get it ready for some light-moderate off road trails and to be used as a family camping, fishing and shooting truck. I started off with doing a 10 hour interior detail on it because it was used on a farm for 21 years so it had layers upon layers of mud and a funky smell. The following weekend I spent many hours cleaning and sanding every nook and cranny on the exterior so that my DIY bedliner job could stick well. I bought the UPOL tintable Raptor Liner kit and then purchased the OEM Emerald Green base coat. Then for the flares, rocker panels and bumpers, I got the black color bed liner.

On my third weekend of ownership I finally got around to spraying the bed liner on. Took about 8 hours total but thats because there's an hour pf flash time between coats and I needed to wait a few hours for the upper green panels to be dry enough so that I could get it taped up to paint the lower half. Overall I am very happy with how it turned out. Got the new headlights and tail lights installed as well.

What headlights did you get and how do you like them?

Welcome to DP! That "paint" job looks pretty good!

I got the headlight set off of ebay and the brand and seller where dotcomracing. The fitment of the headlights was great. The bracket that mounts the headlight was a little on the flimsy side compared to the oem ones so Im not sure how they will last long term. As for light output, they look about as bright as most modern oem headlights. To be honest, a candle could have been brighter than the old fogged out ones that I had.

Overall for the $60 price that I paid, they were a worthy investment. If I have to get new one 3-4 years down the line then it wouldnt bother me.

Nice, thats my favorite design of the aftermarket ones, but I hear once adjusted they can look stoopid because of poor fitment.

What tires do you have planned?

I am looking for a decent used set on craigslist as Im on a budget. Currently found two different sets im interested in that both happen to have Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. Both are also in a 35" size.

Read up on 35's on your model, I've heard a lot of people having issues with them rubbing badly even with a 6" lift... but that might be an issue on 1/2 tons only. Its the tire size I'd ideally like to run. Great tires though.

Ive read of guys that run them with 3" of body lift alone. Depends on the wheel width and offset.
