LLY intermittent No Crank No Start No Codes

This is my Dad's truck 04.5 LLY he bought new 170,000 miles.

Go to start truck these are the start attempts
  1. Dash lights up NO crank
  2. Dash lights up 1 quick crank then it cuts out
  3. Dash lights up 1 quick crank then it cuts out
  4. Dash lights up cranks good no start
  5. Dash lights up cranks good no start
Wait 15 mins my buddy shows up we look for chaffed wires.

Go to start again
  1. Dash lights up cranks good no start
  2. We prime the fuel system Fires right up
Go to start again

  1. It fires right up 10 times in a row.
We check codes with tech 2 to see if anything comes up.. No codes

He did have a turbo vein position code a few weeks ago, but we found a chaffed wire and it hasn't come back.

I just hate to tell him drive it until it happens again but I think that's the only solution till it throws a code.

The weird thing was the crank once then cut out...

I'm thinking a few possibilities

  • Wire we haven't found
  • Possible trans position sensor
  • ECM is taking a crap
  • Ignition switch is on the fritz

NO crank
You have to confirm that the starter is either getting or not getting a signal to crank then go from there.

We prime the fuel system Fires right up.
You have a fuel leak.

Update. Truck started up fine and ran good again today. I just told my dad not to turn it off in the middle of nowhere until we can get it to duplicate symptoms or throw a code to give us an idea.

Fuel leak might have cost it to loose prime, but still doesn't explain the no crank unless there needs to be a certain fuel pressure to allow the engine to crank.

We replaced the fuel lines and fuel cooler awhile back. When I get a chance I'm gonna put it on a lift and check everything out from the underside as well.

Just depends how he has his notifications set up. I don't want to be notified so I don't get them.

Very seldom two people have exactly the same symptoms.
So your getting.
The weird thing was the crank once then cut out...
Dash lights up NO crank
Dash lights up 1 quick crank then it cuts out
Dash lights up 1 quick crank then it cuts out
Dash lights up cranks good no start
Dash lights up cranks good no start

So you have this too?
We prime the fuel system Fires right up.

uncletony, Didn't have any codes. You the same?
I'm just amazed that every thing is exactly the same.

Like said above, prime the fuel system Fires right up.
This means you have a fuel leak. Your system isn't holding a prime.

Truck has been starting and running fine since. Have not narrowed down the problem since the problem has not reoccurred. The only thing I can say is start jiggling wires and check for chaffes.

Update. Truck had problem again. My dad just started jiggling wires and got truck to fire up though.
I told him he needs to always park in the garage now and when the problem occurs again to not touch anything so we can get some testing done and figure it out.
