Oldsmobile 5.7 glow plug question

I've got a 1980 Olds diesel wagon that I bought new. It has constantly had problems with the glow plugs and glow plug controller, so I quit driving it years ago and stored it in the barn.
I've decided it would be fun to get it out and running again, but I want to deal with the glow plug issue to make it reliable. I see a lot of references to the different types of glow plugs available these days...such as the 60G. Original equipment for this car are the 8Gs, which I'm nervous about using with a manual switch since they apparently will burn out if energized more than 8 seconds...which happened often with my defective controllers.
I don't mind a longer wait time to start it, and from what I read, the 60G might be suitable for manual control in this engine. Anyone have experience with these? And is the electrical connector the same as an 8G? I'm hoping I can just swap them out directly and install a manual switch to activate the glow plug relay.
Thanks for any insights on this....

I would unplug the two pin connector at the solenoid on the passenger fender install a new pigtail. Unit is Not self grounding so one ground one hot. You may ground it and run 12v+ from a button in the cabin or opposite! Install 60g plugs good to go.

I got the Bosch version of the 60g in my 81 with an original controller and they worked fine even below freezing temps. I have apparently been lucky and not had controller issues but there apparently were a lot of crappy controllers out there.

There apparently was a VW controller setup that worked well but has become difficult to find now and expensive if you do find them so the best thing off the shelf now seems to be the 6.2 controller which has the relay/solenoid integrated.

I was using acdelco 8G plugs with the 6.2 diesel electronic glow plug controller for years on my 5.7 engines.I think I had one 8G fail in about 10 years running.
