5.7 DX shudders on test stand

Recently acquired a DX goodwrench, low miles, clean. Did the normal fuel flush, swapped out the can filter for a remote spin on. Running the engine on a test stand, clean fuel, new lines, bled system completely. My trouble is, I get a surging, or loping at idle. I swapped out the injector pump with 2 others I have, both are known good pumps. Is it possible because I am only running the flex plate on the crankshaft causing the governor to act up? Any thoughts from those that have run these on a test stand without any sort of crankshaft counterweight?(in this case a torque convertor filled with fluid)
Engine was in a 1980 toro-w/ external EGR, block clean and dry, running exaust right off the manifolds. Mechanical advance plunger was stuck in, 3 or 4 cycles freed it up. Pulled the plugs off both sides of the pump and both pistons move freely.
A little about myself. Retired construction mechanic. grew up with these engines. Owned several, first 78 chev PU, great luck with everyone I owned. The company I worked for ran several of these engines in both PU and cars, took advantage of the replacement program in several units at the time. Rebuilt quite a few of these over the years, the most recent this past winter. i drive a 81 olds Delta 88 Royal daily. Love the sound, love the smell!!

Wish I could help you but sounds like youre quite a bit more advanced than I. User id dieselolds would be the best person I would know to help you. Havent seen him in a few weeks though. Might be hanging out in the 6.5 section. This forum is a ghost town except for a few of us.

Thanks for the reply JCDiesel.
I figured with over 140 views and no results there wasn`t much interest in the 5.7`s. It`s one of those engines that you have to understand to appreciate. Anyway, everything is good, the hunting/searching which caused the shudder, is no more. When I get a little time I can explain the reason"S" this happens.

Yep its pretty quiet in the 5.7 section here. Like someone said on the olds board it seems normal for them to do that with no load on them. I have never run a 5.7 in a stand myself but I did see an international with a stanadyne IP run in a stand and it did the same thing till they got it back in the tractor then it settled down and ran nice and smooth. Guess it has something to do with the way the governor in the IP works, without any load its changing too fast.

Just noticed you are in the UP. I have been up in Marquette on a job since February. Still saw ice on Superior last week and it snowed on Thursday / Friday. Finally headed home after a day in Escanaba and Iron Mountain.

95 Burb K25 3.73's CRASHED 250K miles, looks to have been rebuilt at least once, stock, bad rust, DE exhaust w/walker muffler, 8' western plow.
81 Buick Riviera GAVE AWAY with the infamous Olds 5.7 diesel possibly still going strong.
15 VW Golf wagon, TDI. Did the buyback on my 13 Jetta TDI wagon so it was basically a trade up.
96 Burb K25 3.42's SOLD at 340K miles, told it was all original, close race between engine wearing out or body completely rust out.

You were in my neighborhood, Esky. is about 60 miles north, Green Bay Wi. 60 miles South.
Your right about the IP, it doesn`t have much for a buffer,(it looks like a spring from a ballpoint pen) body pressure from the supply pump is enough to make the advance/retard pistons go crazy, especially with a cover that has no body pressure relief solenoid (california emission system) Changed covers with a pressure relief solenoid and the low pressure held the advance/retard pistons a little calmer. bolted a transmission up to the block and everything calmed down. I`ve never run a roosa master on a stand either, usually just rebuild them and stick them back in. But this is a spare and was anxious to fire it up. I`ll know better next time.
