I believe it was the 1988 model year. That was the same year they switched to the smooth side body style that existed until the late 90's.

Im wanting to put a 12v cummins in a 93 chevy 4x4 and everyone i talked to says to do a SAS. some people have said to get a front axle from a 1 ton ford.whats your alls advice on a front axle? If i go with a straight axle, do i use coil or leaf springs? I just dont know whats up the straight axle in the first place. the ifs is tuff imo. center-link, tie-rod sleeves and your good to go! you have sled pulled "01duramax6spd" and know how tuff they are and i have too. maybe it has something to do with the cummins swap? hell, i dont know

since you have coils in yours, its probably easier to put the complete powertrain from a 2'nd gen dodge in yours, then everything bolts up to the engine easier. if you decide on leaf springs I'd get the powertrain from a 1'st gen dodge, but mounting the shackles will be a task

Best axle to run is a 78/79 Ford D60. You have to run a Ford axle to get the diff on the right side. The 94+ Dodge D60's aren't as strong as the GM and Ford versions. If you use the Dodge one you will need upgraded shafts to get rid of the CAD. I thing coil-overs will sledpull better and that's what my plan is to do in time. Coils may work too. Another option is to get the front end out of a 05+ Super Duty and use the suspention and everything. You will need to re-drill the hub face for a GM botl pattern or get different hubs with the GM bolt pattern. IFS probably won't like the weight of the Cummins over time.
I probaply overlooked some stuff but thats a start. I've done a ton of research and sold a ton of axles and parts to guys doing this stuff.
