Need help TRYING to make a decision, I have a 2011 GMC 2500HD 6.6 DURAMAX , I'm new to diesels , not a mechanic, bought the truck 2 yrs ago. Had it in the shop more than I would like first 3 months after I bought it, now in the shop again, this time DEF tank heater ( $1000. ) Question: should I just pay a pro to delete entire DEF system or pay dealer $1000 to replace heater?????

If not in an emissions testing state. Delete.

Isnt the DEF tank heater still covered under its special policy?

I have thought often of getting rid of the DEF SYSTEM but I don't know enough about DELETE!!!
Can anyone tell me how much it costs for a typical DELETE???

My truck has 156000 miles on it , no warranty

I have a 2011 3500 LML, deleted the DEF, DPF & EGR (& removed everything). In Alberta, easy to sell privately and many GM dealers will take it in trade - not so in other Provs/States.
Had replaced every bit of DEf 2-3x under warranty, also EGR and all the frustrations with CEL's. Love it. Not tuner since the ECU was reprogrammed so that all diagnostics and other non DEF/DPF & EGR CEL's will still work fine.
35-40% better fuel mileage - not kidding. Unbelievable. Power is better but I have never had to use what it already had so tough to tell % improvement. No black smoke if you keep injectors clean with a good additive. Smells like a diesel, but with new exhaust, hardly any extra noise.
It's a new truck now that I will not want to sell.

I understand that other deletes use a tuner, not familiar with that.

I find it awfully hard to believe 35-40% better mpg's. Sorry, same setup essentially and have super clean fuel additized to 50+ cetane on the farm.

Not kidding my friend, you can do the math. In kilometres, max I was able to get prior was 700kms (or 435m) per tank till empty(that is indicated on the range printout). Today, right now I am showing 960km (or 596m) range - that is 37%. I have had it done for about a year and it has been consistent. That mileage is showing on the readout as 14.7km/100 liters or 16.0 mpg. That is unloaded. I carry a camper and the mileage obviously goes down but the % improvement remained consistent. No need to bs with the numbers, just providing input to the query.

And you say you were able to delete everything without a tune or are you simply using an updated tune file at stock power level?

I've always hand calculated myself as the driver information center wasn't that accurate for me after tuning.

So got the DEF tank heater replaced at dealer, cost turned out to be $836. Spoke with a local shop who told me a simple DELETE and TUNE , looking at around $1800 . and no guarantee to gain any fuel mileage. Thinking I will do this next time any problem comes up with this DEF system instead of throwing more money to the dealer !!
