That is plenty of power to get the job done. Anything more is to get up the hill faster and burn more fuel. (not very necessary but really fun.)
Just saw in a 2011 diesel truck Chevy release that it has a 36 gal tank and goes 680 mile. that = 18.8 mpg

I think that's a step in the right direction for GM but not good enough compared to what Ford is doing. Every one of us has babied the truck for a short distance and I've never seen more than 24 mpg from a stock duramax.

"Ford recently invited journalists to test-drive the new Super Duty in Arizona. During the program, Ford challenged these reporters to a contest to see who could achieve the best fuel economy while driving a the Ford-built 6.7-liter Power StrokeŽ V8 on an 80-mile stretch of surface roads and highways. The winning media team on the first round achieved 29.2 mpg and the second an astonishing 34 mpg! Three-person media teams drove from Buckeye to Glendale, Arizona, in an F-250 or F-350 with 1,000 pounds of payload."

From here:

IMO those are incredible numbers for something around 9,000 lbs rolling down the road, that's one fat pig throwing down those numbers. I don't care how hypermilled the miles are I've never heard of another truck doing this AND being willing to publish the results on the internet.

Sorry for beating a dead horse but I think credit is due. Especially since it should make all of our lives better. Come on GM bring back the 4.5 for fall of 2010!

I just read that report. Those are not real world numbers. The 34 mpg guy was drafting off of other people. Excitement turned to disdain when I realized it was just another gimmick...

Someone posted he was driving 50 mph on open highways. I don't know where that come from. Maybe the twitter link I can't access at work?

Actual test data showed that the trucks were being pushed by an out of control Toyota with a stuck accelerator.....There is no possible way a truck of that weight and size can achieve those numbers in real life driving situations....

All agreeable points. I'm very interested to hear what the real world numbers come back some time in May or June from the first people that get them. (they're being released in April right?)

I'd expect the numbers to be closer to the 28mpg highway that was achieved on the 1900 mile trip, still very respectable.
