A quick note on 4L80E transmission computers. Some might consider getting a TCM from a 4L80E equipped 1992-1993 6.5 truck. This TCM controls the transmission only and is designed for the DB2 pump and of course the DB2 TPS. Well, it sounds good but there is a problem. In 1994 GM upgraded the 4L80E transmission force motor and spacer plate in the valve body. The newer force motor operates at 614 Hz, vs 292.5 Hz for the 1993 and earlier units, which means they are not compatible with the older TCM.

I think that it refers to Tr00b wanting to use the older standalone TCM, but can't because it requires the use of the older solenoid.

If I wasn't going to swap it, i was hoping the package deal to convert was worth some money, which, it isn't, because the controller won't work.

Just a bummer because my budget is 3 sticks of gum and a Crystal Pepsi, especially after buying the heap the parts are in.

If you dont have a nv4500 as tommy suggested (the route I'd take as well..)

Why not use a manual valve body in the 4l80 and ditch the controller all together...

From summit (72 different types of floor shifters for the 4l80 varying in price. Sorted from low to high)

...or just shift from the column until you get a floor shifter...

hope all this nonsense helps

NV4500 and manual shift 4L80 are definitely outside my price range. I was hoping to make the swap with only time/shop supplies in it. Probably the cheapest option would be to build the 1992 4L80 with the right solenoid setup and a 4x4 tailshaft instead of the 2x4 one.

What sucks is, while looking for the really specific trans computer suggested by the How-to OkDually posted....

They are totally buried on car-part.com because everyone thinks a 94 up 6.5 PCM is a transmission controller because it's not in the same place as the gas ECM. Pro tip, probably a good place to look for a cheap PCM in the "transmission computer" search criteria...

This might be more of a question for the "Transmission" Section.

Does anyone know the differences between the old style force motor and the new style force motor? Is the 94 up trans a better trans overall and worth the effort to maintain?

In addition to the info below, the old pressure solenoid operates at a lower frequency than the newer one so the 91-93 TCM will not work on a 94-up tranny, for very long.
