Adding overhead type console

Hi Everyone,

I did a search but didn't seem to find anything, so I apologize if it's been covered or redundant.

Has anyone added an overhead type console to their mid 90s truck? Are there model years that come with one and could be adapted to a 1994 style? Just curious, it's certainly not a necessary mod, but would be nice. If anyone has done it and has advice and pics that would be great.

Thanks!

I believe most 90's 3500 trucks and Suburbans came with an overhead console.

My old 98 did not come with one, and it was a Silverado, probably an option.

I would think they all mount the same, so shouldn’t be difficult to install...I think only issues might be wiring if there’s lights or switches.

My 2002 just has a “stubby” overhead console with a single pocket and dome lights.

Maybe I can find one, cut my headliner and wire it easy enough... Not the highest priority, but would be nice to have light further forward rather from the middle of the xtra cab length roof.

You can use any console you want. I added a 2000s console to my ‘84. It’s nice having the overhead lights.

@BanksLB7Duramax

Did you just cut the foam core of the headliner, wire it to the stock dome lights? Did it need any support?

Are you just wanting extra light for the front? If so I know some of the fbody cars had lights in the rear view mirror. I had a 90 years ago and it had them. If your just wanting extra light to me that would be the easiest way to get it. I don't remember how it was wired but it was only 2 wires.

I cut a hole in the headliner. But it was a bit easier for me since I was putting a headliner in a non-headliner truck, so I had access to the roof for wiring and such since the truck didnít come with any wiring for an overhead console. I ran the wires through the A-Pillar. I made a plate with nuts attached to it for mounting the console, then I epoxied it to the metal roof. I reupholstered the headliner with a dark grey suede and it looks great with the dark grey overhead console.

My crew cab is a 6 seater. I think that's why no overhead consoles but I do have mid and rear over head lighting. I just put adapters in to run high output leds. They're like 50 something chips. Huge difference. Maybe the mini overhead would do the job for you
