Rattle

Just picked up my 93 GMC after a transmission rebuild. Transmission works fine but I immediately noticed a weird rattle (as did my wife). Took it to the rebuilder and he says it’s not in the transmission. I tend to agree, it’s correlated to engine rpm’s and disappears when I let off the throttle. Not that noticeable at idle. Immediately noticeable upon acceleration in gear. Only oddity with the engine while rebuilder had it was that I forgot to tell him about the manual glow plug switch so he started it without glow plugs. It’s bad enough that I’m not comfortable driving it. Anyone have any good hypotheses on weird rattles?

Uh oh. Maybe the flex plate? Mine seems to be there under load also. https://www.dieselplace.com/forum/63.../919474?page=1

Your description of the noise, does sound like the flex plate. Maybe the tranny shop forgot to torque down the bolts.

At least that was what happened to mine.

Still haven’t tracked it down. Rebuilder installed a new dipstick tube and thought it might be vibrating and rattling. But no. Sound is kind of like ball bearings rattling in a can. Not quite though. First few miles of driving cold this morning it wasn’t there but returned once warm.

Update: pulled the inspection cover and flexplate seems fine. Took it back to transmission guy who said the bracket holding the fuel lines was not bolted in place on the left side of the Bell housing when he removed the transmission (idiot engine installer did that). So he bolted it back in place and thought it was transmitted engine sounds to body amplifying them. He bent the bracket a bit and wedged some foam between bracket and body. Most of the odd rattle went away. So at the moment it appears cause was not a serious problem.

Rattle is still driving me nuts. That wasn’t the solution. Also removed the turbo heat shield to see if that was the problem. No. Rattle is not as consistent now as it was when I first got it after the transmission rebuild. Have driven it about 550 miles. It’s a kind of rattly hollow rubbing/hitting sound like a spinning piece is loose and sometimes contacting another surface. Stethoscope on turbo doesn’t reveal and similar sound coming from there. Doesn’t make it upon startup. Usually starts rattling intermittently after driving a mile or two and making a sharp turn. Pretty uniformly it happens and gets slightly louder when braking for a stop. Only slightly detectable at hot idle. Wouldn’t be noticeable as a problem unless you already knew it was louder under certain circumstances. Hate to head home across country towing my boat without figuring out what’s going on.

Have you checked the downpipe?
Weak motor mounts allowing the downpipe to rub on the frame may be a source.

I had it up on a lift and looked all around the down pipe and couldn’t see any problem although something related to motor mounts makes sense given the conditions under which it starts
