Itll be purty nice in bout 24 hours there cledus..

The front and rear impeller shaft seals were shot. Not to any surprise at all. Spins ok / mediocre. Hopefully itll turn out ok.

I love home-made and sacrificial tools. I buy sets of cheap wrenches to have on hand just in case. I may go to buying wrenches at my local pawn shop. They have tons of them for cheap.

Figured I'd share some pics of what things look like when your impeller shaft seals are done.

Other signs the shaft seals are worn;
Oil in intake
oil on intake bell and upper plenum where the two connect
Oil all over the turbo... lol

Had this one been run for much longer the shaft would need to be replaced. 100 bucks right there. Ouch.

Well the compressor housing wasn't quite through with me yet.

The thrust bearing retainer bolts were nice and seized. Was going to try an ezout but when drilling the bolts the head just rips right off. To tiny. So I just went for it and rammed the bit in there hoping it would break them (all 4) free.

I got lucky this time.

*I think* I saved the housing... I think. I'll know here in a while.

From here the housing goes in the parts washer to clean it up. Pull out and refinish the drain surface, check those 4 bores and maybe run a tap to clean the threads up and repeat. Then paint and reassembly.

This turbo hasn't been very much fun.

I did manage to save the compressor housing.

Can't say the same for the impeller shaft. Nice and cracked. Lucky it didn't snap off, and by the looks of it... wasn't too far down the road...

Now do you take it somewhere to have it spin-balanced or just put it on the truck? I worry about rebuilding a turbo and having it brake, then sucked into the motor.

Good question...

The shaft assemblies I buy are pre balanced. You install the compressor wheel using the balance marks provided on the shaft and wheel.

(Just my opinion) I'd say the chances of it snapping had I left it alone where MUCH higher vs replacing with cheap unbalanced shaft. (judging by the massive crack in the shaft, and another I noticed later on but didn't take a pic of) but the crack in the rear of the shaft is just under halfway thru the shaft. Disaster waiting to happen... first time I have seen that...

The old shaft will spend the rest of its life on a display shelf as an example.

But I digress..

Spools great. Runs great. Turbo runs cold now
