Speed sensor is on the tail end of the tcase. It monitors rear driveshaft speed, so 4x4 doesn't affect it.

Is the differential actuator in good order?

does your speedometer work? do you have an abs and park brake light on at the same time? If so, the sensor is most likely bad.

Any scanner should work. I have an actron cp9690 which has more capability, and I highly recommend.

I am not an expert on this but have you checked Youtube?
The 4x4 actuating system is the same for gasser and diesel truck, just have to find a video with the push button as supposed to lever actuator.

The components are the actuator, wires, switch is not just the one on the dash.
I got the feeling that any of them can fail randomly.

You may get a faster answer.

So, this picture is taken with the camera just behind where the front diff is, looking back at the transfer case? And the plug is part of the wiring harness for the transfer case?

If so, then that plug might go into a plug for the wiring harness that goes to the transmission. I know for my truck, the 2wd version has the transmission wiring harness plug into the speed sensor at the back of the 4l80e, while the 4wd version, the transfer case harness effectively has an extension for that plug to reach the speed sensor at the rear of the transfer case (one end plugs into the transmission harness, the other into the speed sensor).
