1996 6.5 Turbo Diesel, will start with my foot on the floor, wont Idle.

I may or may not of done good on this truck. I Have a 2000 K2500 with a 5.7
the gasser needs to go, and this 6.5 needs to go in, it sounds great, but even with it running with my foot on the floor, it will run at maybe 1500 rpms, wont idle up or down. I let off, and it dies. I noticed the oil pressure guage is low, questionable, so oil pressure readings from a tester soon to come, and as long as its over 10psi I will put a new sending unit in it. I had to repair the broken starter bolt, from the bracket that causes certain death if missing! I am 31, and been a mechanic my whole life, just going to be a learning project.

another off topic issue, is taking this engine from a 96 and putting it in a 2000, what can I do to get it atleast up to an obd2 plug, harness, and I am guessing computer?

Welcome to the forum

Sounds like you have lots of air in the fuel system..
Have you changed air and fuel filters? bled the system of all air?

As far as swapping over you will need to swap the Engine Harness, Instrument Cluster,
PCM, Oil Cooler and lines, Fuel filler and sender or complete diesel tank.. and IIRC , you will also need to swap the motor mounts if it's 4wd..

As far as the Oil pressure, try installing an AC/Delco brand OPS and see if it changes..
Aftermarket brands tend to make things go wonky with the 6.5L
Any electrical parts you change be sure to use only AC/Delco parts..

If no change, install a mechanical gauge on it for a true pressure read.

I would rather a mechanical guage, but does the truck need the orig ops to run?
I plan on using every piece on this motor for the swap, However i got a little grumpy when I went to plug my scanner in and it was obd1, if doing all this, I would like to try to bring it up closer to the year of my truck electronic wise. but the only answer may be finding a 97-00 6.5

I will go through the fuel system today, air was my first thought also.

Once again... an aftermarket OPS may be causing an issue! Change it, no ifs ands.. or buts.. AC Delco: D1808A

When it comes to electrical parts on a 6.5L it must be AC/Delco brand or you may be chasing your tail when trying to solve an issue!

If you need to read codes on an OBD1 you can use a paperclip!
Just follow the info in this link. Diagnostic codes OBD I - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

96 should be an OBD-II.

94-95 is OBD-I.

its a 9/95 which must be why its obd1 what i was looking for, with the ops, would of been yes, use a mechanical guage, but the origional ac delco ops has to be there also for the sake of the truck, true or false?

i am going to look for a truck thats 96 up, for parts, harness, and anything else, as I do not want to put an obd1 system in a 2000 truck, if there is anyone with ideas, or pros or cons, im open to anything.

You can use a Plumber's Basin wrench to remove the OPS if needed.
The starter support bracket is a must have item..
Do not start the vehicle anymore until you have the bracket in place!
