3600 & 4400rpms???

R u thinking This is not a small block gasser I would strongly encourage you to resist revving past 3K and even that is past the rpms the OEM turbo generates much if any additional power.

6.5 TD great motor cheap to operate and repair but not going to win many races

And where is the best point to put in the boost needle for reading boost?

I'm woefully ignorant on the DB2s so please forgive/correct me. Some thoughts if you're still seeing unusual amounts of black smoke.
1. IP Timing/position correct. Not sure how one does the DB2 timing/positioning other than the reference marks. I didn't see anything in the IP FAQs.
2. How new is the "New" IP; NIB, Rebuilt or New to the Truck as in used 'known good' to the last owner?
3. Fuel Screw setting on the new IP, could it be improperly set as in turned up?

somewhere on the top manifold plenum is where you can install the boost piece. i drilled a hole on the back side of it facing the firewall for a clean look on my one truck.

Leroy Diesel has a Boost Bolt that you install by removing one of the back plenum bolts and install the boost bolt in its place for an instant tap source.

Leroy has a video of how it works on his website.

Drilled and tapped the plenum and the boost is 5 to 6 full throttle on 3rd gear. Up. To 8 psi in a 5th pull. And guys no vacuum pump here. It's a mechanical wastegate
