6.5 starts then dies then wont start again

hello everyone i am having an issue with my 97 gmc k2500 when i turn the key on the glow plugs kick in and it will start then after running for around 5 minuets it will die and the glow plugs will no longer heat and the truck will not start. It does not throw any trouble codes. it has a brand new glow plug controller brand new glow plugs only has 130k on the engine. i am not sure what to look at here. any ideas would be greatly appreciated as i would love to have my truck back now that winter is in full swing here in northern wisconsin.

5 minutes of running is enough to warm the engine enough that the glows may not cycle also enough that an otherwise healthy engine should restart without them.

Have you been reading here? Have you done any other tests? Like for lift pump?

Done filters lately? Should not be a problem yet but is it possible you have 'summer' fuel still?

it is good to check the Lift Pump. make sure you hear the thumping sound from under the cab near the drivers side door where the lift pump is. you can put the truck in Neutral and turn the key, it should make the famous thumping sound that you can hear. you can get fuel, and the lift pump can stop working or work weak even though you are getting fuel. also check for ANY air in the lines, it may be putting fuel up to the IP but not keeping it. make sure the FFM (fuel filter) canister is full and look for cracked fuel lines and fuel anywhere on the lines.

How do you know these things? Just trying to get more info to know what we can rule out or where to focus.

Well, the first thing is to do load test on both batteries one at a time.

If you don't have load tester, take them out and bring it to the part store.

If you are able to drive it, bring it there but take off the cable connecting both batteries.

Which brand of new GPs did you put in? also for the Controller?

When it comes to Electronic components/Sensors for the 6.5L, they need to be AC Delco brand or your asking for Gremlins..

I had a problematic controller from O'Reilly's and switched to AC Delco and no more problems!
