Valve covers are off, replace rocker retainers with ???

I have the valve covers off and the rocker retainers look original, so I'd like to replace them. Do any options exist for keeping the rockers on the head?

I've seen some threads with people putting bolts through with nylon lock nuts, welding bolts in, rivets, and replacing with early 6.2 cast rockers (I like the last one but don't have the money). Is one better than the other? Is there such a thing as a metal retainer that looks like the OEM plastic ones?

Lots of threads on it.
Since the hole is through the shaft, a bolt with a correctly sized washer would work well.

I like the Harland sharp roller rockers, but the $600 price is daunting...

Those holes are for Allen Wrenches to hold the capped ends from spinning while the grade 8 bolts are tightened down. Forgot the name of the company that did the work for the engine builder. Pop rivets...please!

I'm confused on the hardware used. Bolts with the heads facing down and the metal cup/nut on the top side?

If there truly is a hole all the way through the shaft I may put some nylon or metal lock nuts/bolts in.

Those instructions involve removing the rocker shaft. Is it safe to do that with however the rockers are sitting? Likewise for re-installation? (valves partially opened/closed)

I'm going to see what I can find at the hardware store. Since these button things are just center/locator pieces I don't think it'll be hard to find something that works.

You can remove and replace the rocker arms with no problems. I would make sure to put them back the way they are (keep parts in the same locations), just my preference.
The pushrods do have a top and bottom end if you happen to remove them.

Sorry for the delay in answering. The work was done by Portland Engine Rebuilder's: retainer mod for the 6.2 6.5.

Current price through Unique Diesel for a similar set is $400+ which is for a completely remanufactured rocker assy., not just the bolts. Not sure what my costs were as they were part of a package of spare parts deal.
