Thanks for all the great info everyone. So does anyone think that anything else could cause this noise? On the off chance it doesn't go away...I'm lucky like that

Ya were all lucky like that. That knock you describe at shutdown is most likely the crank pulley. Replacing the balance while your there is the best thing you can do especially if you dont know the history.

It was the pulley! The rubber was completely torn! So I replaced it the balancer and the crank seal. Really wasn't bad especially with the right tools. Thanks for all the help everyone.

My truck was making a racket too....LOUD. Thought it was the steering pump or something..... I bought a 'new take off' pulley from Peninsular Diesel for $35.00 ( about $50 shipped).

I bought a new balancer from Rock Auto (and seal), but the mechanic who did the water pump said the balancer still looked good. Like yours, my pulley was shot. The rubber looked fine, but the outer part of the pulley separated from rubber it was connected too. I'm guessing that happened when my alternator bearing seized up....then I forced the truck to start and melted my serpentine belt..... that's when the truck started making all that racket (outer part of pulley was hitting the mounting bolts......)

Yes, I know, I should have put the balancer on while it was all apart. But there was already too much time into it at the shop.....tight budget.....

This thread got me thinking about my shutdown clatta, and of course, mine was blown as well... Why did GM go to this stupid pulley system? I like the solid pulley on the 6.2 and older chevy motors... My 4.3v6 has a solid steel serpentine pulley...

Can the solid 6.2 pulley be put on the 6.5?
Was there a noise or vibration reason they did this?

(ps - whats up vstech? This is JB3 off PP. My normal web identity was taken already here)

Well, if ya want to check yours, just a matter of taking the serpentine belt off and crawling under the truck to see if the pulley has "play".

I too was surprised by this type/style/design. I was expecting the "traditional" pulley of all steel....that's why when people said in earlier posts, their pulley went bad, I was doing a "what.....that doesn't make sense".

Makes ya think, aside from the FAQ questions, there should be a pictorial FAQ section....for some things.

My truck still makes a funky ticking sound.....sometimes (a quiet tick). But MUCH, MUCH quieter then before. When the AC cycled on/off you could tell (ie load on the engine).
