H/O Waterpump

Hey guys,

What year did the H/O WP come into play? Im comparing part numbers on rockauto, and it seems that in 99 they still have the bolt on pulley pump as an option, however the part number does seem to differ from anything earlier. Im assuming this could be what im looking for?

I really dont have the cash to buy something from heath or any other site sponsor, for a pump 2x the cost for literally the same product .. if this is what im looking for!

IIRC, '97 was the first year for the HO water pump. I have read that 2000 model year is the best one to get for an upgrade.

After doing some research, the '99-'00 pump is what im trying to hunt down. AC Delco part #88894036. GMPartsDirect wants over $200 new BLAH! Well, autozone cross referenced the number to there pump #DWP-9021 for ~$80, and its in stock!

Not sure about the 99 HO pump, but the 2000 is a spin on hub for the fan clutch, not the four bolt hub if that is what you are looking for.

I may be wrong, but I was thinking the HO pump with balanced flow was available only in 2000, with the spin on hub. I'm thinking all other HO pumps prior to that were not balanced flow. I could be wrong though.

I was wondering that too.

Posts here said the 97 year was the first year. People were also saying to upgrade to the threaded on fan clutch. I assumed that the post 97 6.5's had thread on fan clutch's vs the bolt on.... until, like you, saw the bolt on option still.

I too saw the "kits" that some retailers were selling and raised a brow at the cost. The price of the HO pump is less then $100 from the sites I have seen and I seem to find the dual thermostat housing for $150. In theory, if I can reuse the old OEM 6.5 fan clutch/fan assembly 'for now', I can upgrade to the 'Duramax clutch/fan' at a later date....

That Autozone pump number, for my area is listed at $98.00

I have a brand new H/O water pump, never used, but has the "bolt on" style flange, that I would get rid of if anybody is interested.

I went with the 2000 up pump on my truck with the spin on style.

1996 mid model year is when the HO water pump was introduced. The "balanced flow" thing is total BS. I'd be curious to see some documantation showing what is "balanced" about it.

The screw on hub offers no true benefit other than assembly line efficiency and parts reduction. It also eliminates the use of the only TRUE lower engagement temp fan clutch available.

It is also worth noting that many 1999 model vehicles still had the 4 stud type hub.

For those interested in making a complete upgrade, we offer our cooling mods pkg with the water pump, crossover, high flow stats, hoses, heater niple etc. just as we have been doing for the past 10-12 years now.

There's an article out there that claims pump p/n 88804035 (2000+ model) delivers 48 gpm vs. 22 gpm for the 96-99 model pump through the passenger side head (the hot side). Take it for what it's worth.

There's also some indication that single thermostat setups on the higher volume 96+ pumps can cause cavitation and premature pump failure. A thermostat that does not block the bypass port beneath it may remediate the issue. Thermostat quality is of utmost important on this system. A search will tell you to use only OEM parts or the 1 or 2 proven after market solutions.

Another consideration for non OEM water pumps is the potential for poor casting and machining: https://www.dieselplace.com/forum/sho...0&postcount=15

There's a few threads out there on this if you look for them.

I like the idea of the duramax style composite fan (lighter) that the spin on fan clutch uses. A low temp spin on fan clutch would be AWESOME. I'll probably just go with electric fans, though.

Well we've got the thermostats that flow, water pumps that work, and use the 4 stud hub style that accepts my Special Calibration Clutch, and you can use either the 20" steel fan (OEM 97+) or the plastic Dmax fan.

I prefer the steel fan over the plastic one based on air flow specs and discussions with teh BW engineer that built my clutch. I basically make less sales recommending the OE blade for my clutch.
