454 vortec to 6.5 td swap???

Haven't been able to find much info on this swap....I found a 99 crew cab short box 2500 with a blown vortec 454. I'm thinking about picking it up and swapping my 6.5 out of my 97 3500. I know ild have to swap my ecm, is it compatible with a 99? What else would be involved in doing the swap.

You'd have to swap the engine side harness to the 6.5 harness. Different torque converter, different fuel pump/sender. That's me winging it, my knowledge of the GMT400 platform is limited to my folks '94 K2500.

This is my first 6.5 and I've only ever had tbi so my knowledge is also limited. I imagined I would have to swap entire engine harness, I'm just curious if everything in the truck would be compatible and if the fire wall plugs on the vortec are the same as 6.5 or if I would have to alter them. Would need to change the Custer I imagine for the tach... Really hope I can get some insight I don't want to start it and it turn into a gong show....would have both donor vehicles so all parts should be available. I read the 6.5 requires a different bellhousing?

I would bet that the engine harness just bolts up to the fuse block. Doesn't make sense for the gas and the diesel plugs to be different. BUT... GM has fooled me before....

Yah, cluster will have to be changed over. That should just drop in though.

Bellhousing is where I'm not sure. Ive never personally been able to prove the bellhousings on a gas engine and a diesel are different. The supposed difference is how deep the starter hole is (snout touches the housing). But why not just pull the engine and trans from the donor and put it all in the new truck? That would make more sense to me.

Post over in the Frankenstein section. There's lots of motor swap knowledge over there.

I love my 6.5 as much as the next guy, but that sounds like a step backwards to me. IMO just put another 454 in it.

Engine, cluster, maybe interior wiring, harness, accessories and brackets, rad, maybe condensor, fuel lines, sending unit, ecm, and might have to swap the column or at least the lock cylinder for the chip key. A lot of work but if you have the time, then go at it.

you will need to swap the dash harness, and engine harness. you will have to replace the fuel pick up and you can either splice the chassis harness or swap it for the lift pump. you will have to swap clusters. one think that kicked my butt was the theft lock ignition cylinder. I used the fuel line front the tank to the gas filter and the return to the same point and then the lift pump and lines from there forward will attach perfect. ditch the vent lines to the tank. abs and srs are integral with the engine dash and chassis harness and they have year specific plugs. if you have 4x4 97 and 99 front axle wiring is different so you will need to modify the harness. still haven't figured that out yet.

I swapped a 97 diesel into a 96 454 burb. I used some 98 electronics and that caused major issues. my 98 engine harness and 97 dash harness DO NOT work as plug and play. I am still working on getting them to interface.
