TS with cruise, soot scrubber removal, oil, fuel, filters

Always wanted an HD, and this 2000 was what I wanted sans, A/C or cruise. I can live without AC, but I really wanted cruise. After joining this site, I read that it was as simple as swapping out the TS lever. I did that today and took it for a cruise (pun intended), and the cruise works perfectly. The fuse was already in the slot. I went with the Standard brand. I did remove the steering wheel, as I am not as nimble as I once was.

I also cut the soot scrubber out of the exhaust, and fit a straight pipe in its place. Not sure if it will help as of yet. I can hear a little more turbo whine, but it still has the stock muffler. They don't carry glasspacks, turbo mufflers, or an original style muffler in any of the parts stores up here in the sticks, so I will have to order something online when I can. Would like a straight through muffler to replace the original, 3" in/out, offset, offset.

I then changed to oil, filter and fuel filter. Kept some of the oil for a analysis. Need to get a kit and see what a 260,000 mile motor looks like..

Anyway, a successful day in the shop!

Checking the block and heads for cracks, then assembling with new head gaskets, injectors, glow plugs, valve cover gaskets, and fluids.

They run GREAT with stright pipes. You're gonna be glad you ditched the soot scrubber.

I have the diamondeye kit on my 6.5 it was easy to install and honestly quite cheap for a turbo to tailpipe kit, I have the one with the resonator and its pretty good IMO, no drone on the highway.

On my TDI I had bought it straight piped and the drone was annoying on the highway, I installed a 3" muffler from amazon called TOTALFLOW, it was probably the cheapest muffler I've ever bought, the construction was solid though, it wasn't tinfoil, the welds were decent, the size was perfect, the price was unreal cheap. It is a muffler, not a glass pack, but its very free flowing and has about the same sound deadening as a glass pack (very little) it removed the drone on the highway and I only hear it WOT, very similar to the diamond eye. I wouldn't hesitate to put this muffler on any other turbo diesel.

...anyway...

So a friend of mine and I made some headway on one of my injection pumps last night (5079)... took some good motivation () some tiny pliers, some tinier pliers, and some large pliers... alot of brute force pulling the advance piston retainer pin nipple... and after about an hour of that... it finally let go!

Out came the advance piston, then the pump head and finally the drive shaft.

Yuck. Look @ that nasty crap!

The pump head is likely toast. But itll be fun cracking it open anyway... just to see what seized it. The pump was seized when I purchased it. Some of the weight basket carriers are bent. Nasty corrosion on the advance piston and driveshaft, and pretty much everywhere corrosion shouldn't be... some of the parts may be recoverable BUT... I'm not holding my breath or anything.

The case is what I'm after though. I pulled apart a good 5485 with good guts and a bad case some months back. That was fun. Gonna press the race and bearings, blast the case, clean it up, install the 5485 guts... and presto! Good db2 suitable for the fuel supply needs of a 6.5.

There is an ongoing post on this subject here...

I bought a new delco remy cs144 alternator to replace a cs130D that was on my 96 gmc but I replaced it because the mileage was unknown and I didn’t want to get someplace and become stranded so it worked out well and I bought the conversion electrical connector to go from one alternator type to another without cutting and splicing on another connector.I had to buy a longer belt to make it work but I think if I didn’t have to shim my Ac compressor upward the current belt would have worked.I bought a replacement compressor on eBay which was a little different than the original so I had to put spacers under the compressor to give me the clearance I needed so the body of the compressor wouldn’t hit the mounting bracket.

Last week I replaced the leaking oil cooler lines with the Leroy kit. Wasn't a fun job at all and had to spend time grinding my exhaust manifold to get the extra clearance for the 90 degree connector. Many others had this problem and I wonder why Leroy hasn't addressed it by modifying the kit.
But it's done and no more oil leaks 😁

This evening I put a replacement under hood light upon my 96 gmc.The original was long gone.Only the two small screws and part of the old bracket remained.Anyway I found another type on eBay that came from a Camaro or firebird. It was all plastic and the connector came with it but it works perfect.I’ll take a couple pictures of it tomorrow.
