junk turbo??

ok heres the deal. . . my 96 6.5 f. 191k on it. under full throttle. full load 12k trailer. i get only 10-12 psi of boost. . now keep in mind i have the wastegate completly closed. . cruising at 70 it sits around 1-2 psi. when pulling it only gets up to 10-12. pyro gets to 1100. . the thing that makes me wonder is last week i drove a friends 93 6.5 and he has the same mod to the wastgate and his would hit 15 psi empty just kicking it down to 2nd at 45mph. so im wondering if there is something wrong here??? cat and muffer removed. 3 inch pipe welded in. so im guessing there is no restriction... intake is clean and i just put a new air filter in. . . any help???

Load has everything to do with the amount of boost a turbo will make. Gearing changes load.

Other things change the turbo boost. Timing is one of them. So is fuel. Bad lift pump for example - high boost at low RPM and boost falls off at higher RPM. Happened on mine...

Are you sure your boost gauge is good?

I forget the 96 has a computer to F up (cut) fuel if there is something it doesn't like. Overboost will cut fuel on a 96. This cutting of fuel is what yours is doing. The 1993 is a DB2 mechanical and with a manual trans doesn't even have a computer on board. So the 1993 will not cut fuel unless the mechanical RPM governor kicks in.

Get a tune for the 1996 and a Turbo Master to properly set boost under 14 PSI. Or mod your 1996 to a DB2 with a TM.

Have you removed the fender snorkel?

I would not wire the WG shut as mine went over 15 PSI when the TM was too tight.

Have you run it with a scan tool connected? You need to know what the ecm is seeing from the sensors. If the ecm sees over 15psi boost it will defuel. Wiring the wastegate shut is not a good thing. If it was that simple don't you think most of us would do that?
A 3" exhaust system is restricting it. 3 1/2 or 4" is better. A reflashed ecm with a better tune will help. The factory tune really lacks.
