82 Project Questions

Does anyone know where to find a legroom spec on a single cab 1982 K20? Looking at one as a project/waste oil burner. It was so nasty inside, I could not get inside to sit in it to see if I fit in it because I'm really tall. However, still had paint on the rear of the frame, its in pretty good condition.

When I last drove a squarebody I was 16 and was 6'5". I'm 6'9" now and in my thirties (math is hard)

I've been trying to get ahold of an M1008 for years but never could even get in the same galaxy as far as what I could spend and practicality was lacking with the gearing. This is about as close as I'm going to get. Comes with a small block camper special, and the original overheated engine as well for sub $1k.

Never driven a 6.2 N/A, what does it usually take to get them to perform similarly to a 6.5? Beyond adding a turbo/turning up the pump etc.

With a bench seat and regular cab you will start feeling cramped a bit at 6.9.

You could install low sitting buckets to help with that a lot.

Are you comparing DS4 electronic 6.5 or mechanical?

In all reality there is no comparison 6.2 to DS4 6.5 even with a good turbo and IP. Just lower your expectations and don't leave your foot to the floor, get EGT and boost gauging & watch it.

The interior is 'roached' (used as a tool/whatever storage by a farmer) so that would probably be one of the first orders of business.

Anyone over 6ft driving these trucks? - Page 2 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network Did more searching, finally found this, exactly correlates with what you said.

I guess the MAIN goal have something that I can drive every day and run some waste oil if I want, and that can keep up with traffic okay. Somewhere around or slightly above stock DS4 truck performance.

If for no other reason than checking off an M1008-like truck off the bucket list.

Ya WMO ..... it will cost you IP's as water is very hard to separate from the oil, coolant & micro brass and lead is basically impossible without spending way more than you save to set up a filter, separator. You will slowly take out the head and rotor in the IP, slobbery running, smoking, hard cold starting, impossible hot starts are all signs it's done and needs replacement.

I use to burn it 15-20% in winter and up to 50% in summer and gave up when decent base stock was impossible to get and the 2nd IP and injectors I had put in the truck was done.

How long did you burn it before you had trouble? Did you do anything special with the oil before putting it in the tank?

I was thinking somewhere between 10-50% black diesel. I was able to run about 20% or less black diesel in the 6.5 but it wasn't worth it. Net loss in economy plus work to make it. At one point I read all the way through and kept up with the waste oil thread here. Good to hear your experience on it.

This 6.2 truck has dual tanks for switching too.

I had every problem....

From the start it was Okish with a mild loss of power and added smoke and after the first winter the IP was done. So in went a reman with new head and rotor and it lasted about a year. 2nd new IP had an arctic kit and I pulled the ratios down and it lasted a long time, probably close to 2 years.

My setup was 2, 45g barrels with pre screens, magnets all over the place, multiple filters off of sbd oil pumps. 1st barrel was the ruff stock which sat at least a coupla days before being cycled through it’s filtes for a coupla hrs, then left to sit for another coupla days. 2nd barrel was finish with high beta synthetic filters, same treatment.

It’s a slow decline in performance over time and by my math, everything I ever saved went into new IP’s and injectors.

As of right now my rig is sitting in my storage van body collecting dust, straight re cycled dead dinosaur juice for me now.

Were you blending the oil or just putting it in straight after filtering?

What was the final ratio you last used?

Sorry it was such a pain for you, I did read the entire waste oil thread here and the blenders seemed to do a bit better than the people who used it straight. Everyone seemed to have their successes and failures, and the more waste oil the more failures that happened. Didn't seem to matter how much they filtered etc. The occasional bad "batch" like the batch the turbonators couldn't get the water out of would really make everything not worth it in addition to the mechanical issues and failures

Would you say that a square body rides better than a gmt400 or worse?

2 or 4 wheel drive?

gmt400 4 wheel drive has independent front suspension, far better ride compared to a square body on leave springs. I took my 87 K20 for a ride the other day and went down some rough roads, those 4 lift springs were throwing me all over. Pretty much made my decision to find a decent 2wd gmt400 to build/restore

2 wheel is a tough call, I'd say about even, maybe slight edge to gmt400 because of advancements in suspension.

Vw put a bowed out rear window so bucket seats ,(as previous idea)would go further back (headrests hit there first). If you look at a euro rabbit pickup you will understand.
If you could fabricate something like it or a spacer it's easier than metal cutting and building an extra cab style. You could try building wells into the flat floor to sink seats into, but again quite a lot of cutting and welding. Still possible where there's a will, theres a way.

Thanks for the reply. Basically what I was afraid of.

Was looking at a K20, so 4wd, stock springs and height. Disappointed in the ride on my stock 1500 4x4 96 (now with 2500 leaf springs, which helped some things, and hurt others)

englishjimmyfan, as the seat goes down and back to get enough headroom I also begin to need thigh support (front of the seat longer and higher). There also reaches a point where the seat back needs to tilt backwards due to the goofy angle of the seat bottom. That space to tilt is not available on a single cab and likely not enough space to go backwards to avoid the tilt. Just thinking out loud.

Pretty much everything that I want to do with it will either be an imminent death of it, will disappoint, or will require extensive modification. Probably not a good idea, in general.
