Crankshaft seal replacement, what to expect?

Hello all,

I am replacing the harmonic damper with a fluidampr as well as the crankshaft seal. Will oil dump out once i remove the seal?

Sounds silly but i have already run into some surprises and i got to thinking that removing a seal could potentially let some oil weep out or let a lot out, i just dont know.

Also, i read a 3" socket and some hammer taps helps with install. Truth?

Answer.

Thanks for all the replies.

No, oil does not dump out with the crankshaft seal removed. It does weep a little bit though.

Yes, a 3" deep socket is helpful in installing the new seal.



Side note:

Broke the key right off the crank. The harmonic balancer that was on it came off very easily by hand using the tool KD 2291D. When it came of a little piece of metal fell out too. It was the key nub of the crankshaft. It was running fine before but had some squeaky belts so I'm going to go ahead with the fluidampr install and see what happens. Ill post back with results.

Now i feel ignorant. That key is supposed to be loose like that eh? That chewed up and ground down crankshaft doesnt look right though. Which way should that key go, one way i suppose. Any way to salvage the situation? Tryin to go camping this weekend.

Yes, that key does come out. Round side goes in the crank, and should fit in that slot fairly snug.

I don't think the slot looks too bad, but it's hard to say for sure without being there and seeing how the key fits into it.

Note, you seem to have slightly unrealistic expectations about how quickly you will get answers to your questions here. You may get an answer soon after you post, and you may never get a response. If you need an answer quickly, then you generally need to pay for it, via say, buying/subscribing to the full-service manual for your truck, or going to a local mechanic, or one of the for-pay auto repair sites.

Looks bad. Use a new key and perhaps some loctite. Balancer should fit tight. I would replace the timing chain while you are in there.

That crank looks like it has been treated badly in the past, and it looks like at some point the balancer and key came loose and moved forward ie the marks on the crank..


Keep in mind the balancer should be a tight fit and need a puller/installer and the bolt is torqued to 200ft lbs...

I would guarantee the balancer came loose at some point, walked out, canting the seal and chewed up the crank ..... SBYL ...



IMO, the balancer sorta self aligns on the machined surface of the crank & the large thick washer/bolt combo sooo and long as the balancer isn't fleeerpy loose on the crank, use lock tight and slam it home.

Ok i got it all buttoned back up. By far the hardest part was installing the new seal. The tool i ended up using was a Performance Tool W1273 from oreillys. Its a 2.5" lock nut socket but it was the right diameter of the seal. Something thats 2 7/8" is perfect, in the inner diameter if that makes sense, a little room on either side of 2 7/8" is perfect. Banging that sucker on with 1lbs dead blow was a pain to say the least. I must have gotten it in crooked 60 times before praying and desperately banging on it senselessly. It finally went in though. Then comes the key. It fit fine on the original harmonic balancer but no way on the fluidampr. I got some sandpaper and smoothed out the peens and bumps and imperfections until it slid in the groove easily. Surprisingly soft metal. I needed a second person to help line up the key and keyway. I did put some red 271 loctite in there. It went on just as easy as it came off with the installer using the big washer as a thrust washer so thats worrying but i did get the 200ft/lbs of torque on that bolt so its not going anywhere. It still wobbles at idle but smooths out with throttle applied. The squeaks went away but thats probably because i replaced some missing bolts for the power steering bracket and driver side alternator, surprised it has made it this far honestly.

I am taking it camping/ offroading so if it explodes ill take some pics.

Genuine thanks on the replies though, peace of mind is priceless.
