6.2L 6.5L Head Gasket

I am writing a CARTECH book on the 6.2L and 6.5L diesel engines and need some photos. I worked for GM on the 6.2L project and wrote the 6.2L technicians classroom book 16015.05-2. I worked on the CUCV and HMMWV projects with some work on the 6.5L. I also developed the first material on the Duramax for Wordpictures.com.

Can you tell what is the best head gasket to use. I know late production used the 0.030 OS gasket. What OEM do you recommend?

I also enjoyed the 6.2 video on YouTube showing a guy introducing the 6.2 for the 1982 model year. One of my favourite videos

My 69cents to your dollar...

Use Felpro 6.2 gaskets on 6.2 & 6.5 heads.
Use Felpro 6.5 gaskets only on 6.5 heads as a portion of a water port may not seal and cause you grief if used on 6.2 heads.

Welcome to Diesel Place!! The Big Show!!

This line right here! If the heads are perfectly flat, clean, and the precups don't protrude too much they'll almost always seal. If anything is slightly off, they'll leak. Been there, done that. See below. This leaked out the front of the engine. I did some hack mechanic stuff (RTV over front of engine) to stop it...)

Yaaa... I hate having lil info like that ... cause I found out the hard way!!

Customer insisted on 6.5 gaskets on a 6.2, 2 sets later I figured it out, popped in 6.2 ones and showed em the 6.5 gasket box... truck never came back for leaks.
