Glow plug trouble

I have an 85 6.2 k20 and i recently had an issue with the glowplugs coming on and staying on. I replaced the controller and after that they didnt come on at all. The other day i got in it, turned the key and the glow plugs lit up for a split second and then shut off. They continued to do so everytime I turned the key on after that but they would not stay lit. Any ideas of what could be going on? I thought it might be an ignition switch issue?

It could be the ignition switch.

The controller staying on was not a good sign for it as it has failed.

I would take a test light and find out if you have a key switched signal coming into the controller. I usually run the light into the cab so it's easy to see instead of having to key on, look ...

Since the controller stayed on I would also pull all the GP's and see if they survived. Hold them with a pair of vice grips and hook them across the battery, they should glow from the tip back and even side to side and have no blistering. Any more than 3 odd ones, buy 8...

What about the relay? How would that factor in?

In 86 it should be the single unit GP controller, not the separate controller and solenoid ... but I have be mistaken ...

Like I said the controller has been replaced and i dont think i need to check the glow plugs, theyre brand new and they werent being kept on for that long. I did what you said and there is a key signal being sent to the controller but only through one of the 4 wires in that plug, the large pink one. Is this right or should i be getting power to more than one of those wires?

Wiring schematic for controller... photobucket sucks donkey so you will have look around their crappy arse watermark. Same schematic is in the manual

What kind of glow plugs?
If they are not self limiting and stayed on they are toast.

The student manual (link in my sig) has a great write-up on function and troubleshooting.

Personally I'd wire up a manual setup and be done with it, also does double as a theft deterrent device.

The glow plugs are fine. I can still start the truck manually by jumping the controller. And yes i may end up resulting to that but i cant help but try and fix it. Anyways thank you for the help!

There should be 2, 12V in to the controller, 1 from the key and 1 feed back from the starter.

If you have both, go get another controller ... ya modern electronics and ChimChomy junk, sucks ....

I have power coming from ignition but no power coming back from the starter, and i dont see a fuse anywhere in that wire. Could it be an issue in the starter?

BLK wire - ground.
PNK wire - 12v. ign. (key on)
PPL wire - 12v. starter - when cranking only.
YEL wire - voltage coming from glow plug harness. Can be interrupted by temp sw.
Make sure the yellow wire has voltage during glow cycle.
You can test the YEL wire while shorting the lugs.
