turbonator's 1978 k30 plowtruck build thread...

hey guys, this week we finally signed our big commercial snow contract, and since we dont even have a plow truck, we went truck shopping today...... looked at a 1997 dually with a blown head gasket and huge rust for $1200, a 1994 3500 gasser that has a totally pooched body, and a hood that wont open for $800.00, a 1998 1500 gasser with a 4.3l and 4l60e combo that was not bad, but too small/light for snow removal @ $1500.00, same guy has a 1991 3500 with a 6.2l/4l80e combo for $500 that has no keys or papers....

on our way home we went out of our way on another highway that always has stuff for sale along it, didnt see much, until we were almost to the turn-off to take the highway through gov. land(no houses or population) when we found our truck, a 1978 k30, with rust, gas engine, automatic, and a tree growing through the bumper........ it already has the plow frame on the front, all the hydraulic circuit run, and a tilting hydraulic flat bed on it... needs a lot of TLC, but we got it for $300.00 with papers, and you can bet that the gasser will be going bye-bye, and it will have at minimum a N/A 6.2l going between the frame rails ........ going tomorrow to bring it home, so we will get pics of the process....

Sounds like a find. Hopefully the hydraulics wont take too much TLC, we all know what sorta coin that adds up too.

Waiting for pics

Definitely stressed to the seller, not to cut the tree off, that is growing between the bumper and the rad support, explained to him, how we need pics to document the resurrection properly.....LOL. Good thing we have some doors here, because the drivers door has bondo in it the size and thickness of a stop-sign (does not close either....LOL). Windshield is perfect, has both side windows, and the small (dumper-style) window in the back......hoping the hydraulics will be good Rich. Said he changed the motor about 6-7yrs ago, and all was operational until the fuel pump pooched on him. Also, he still has the new fuel pump in a box for us....LOL. Has not been plated for 15yrs, used it to clean his own snow.....We make the third owner, still has the paper-work from when he bought it.

It will make a nice truck, take a little bit of work, but we have most of the pieces in stock, and not looking for show-room, just nice and clean (and "ORANGE") for working....we'll have some pics tomorrow....J&J.

BTW, Jeff already figures "Woody" is a name fitting for a truck with a tree growing through it......LMAO.

if it has 4.56 gears it would have pretty stiff acceleration.....
