82 6.2 Fast Idle Cold?

I have been reading about a cold start sensor or something on here. Are these suppose to idle higher when cold, like a choke on a carburetor? If so, mine doesn't work.
So far mine starts and runs good(I think). It just doesn't "kick up " idle on it. My controller went out and I just installed a manual switch for the glow plugs.
Can you bypass the cold start plunger or what ever it is?

Yes it makes it idle higher and not like a choke. There is a temp sensor on the passenger rear head that sends power to the green wire on the IP when cold. Under 140* IIRC. The green wire engages the cold advance in the IP and splits to the fast idle solenoid on the side of the IP where the throttle linkage is.
The fast idle solenoid does not have any strength to move the throttle ahead. You have to bump the throttle after it starts and the cam holds it ahead while its energised.

You need to see if you have power to the green wire when cold, if not find out why. If powered, check if its plugged into the solenoid. If that's all good, see if it clicks with 12v. If that's good try adjusting the rod on it to engage further and have more effect. If one of these don't check out you have found the issue.

From the FAQ's.... Fast idle override switch. https://www.dieselplace.com/forum/63-...uestion-3.html

And to add, the glow plug operation has nothing to do with it. So adding a manual glow switch won't affect the operation.

Diaric almost nailed it. It turns off @ 100F/40C..not 140....otherwise he's all good

I wired in a switch for fast idle/coldadvance (same temp switch and wire activates both) if this electrical idiot can do it anyone can

Good to know, I will adjust my brain FAQ's. It seemed like it kicked off to early for 140. 140 must be the glow kick in max

I'm one step above in tricity idiotics. I learnt how a diode works, so my switch kicks on the fast idle but not the cold advance for times when I just want it to speed up, like running the winch. But the factory system still operates.
