There are many thousands of diodes to choose from. But as this is a non-critical application, you don't need to be picky.

The diode should be rated for at least double what the steady current draw is. (to handle the turn-on in-rush) The voltage should be at least 35 V, but that should be easy to find.

I went out an measured my solenoid. The coil resistance is 20 ohm, so at 15 VDC, it will draw about 0.75 A. So a 1 A diode like a 1N4005 would work, but a 3 A like 1N5402 would make me more comfortable.

I'm not recommending RadioShack as a supplier - but if there is one nearby and they have diodes, buying from them is sure faster than mail order from Mouser Electronics.

Not to jack a thread, but I've been pondering the manual high idle myself. It occured to me though that if I don't intend to use my cruise control any more (truck is mostly an off road toy) would it be possible to hot wire the servo to hold the throttle?

Thinking that might give a little more control range. Thoughts?

Why? the fast idle solenoid is adjustable for the RPM you want.

Hmm didn't realize I could adjust it that far. I'll have to play with it some more.

it doesn`t take much to raise the RPM`s up high, the plunger can raise it quite a bit, I used to use it to keep power up for winch and lights

That's what I'm looking for. Wouldn't adjusting it mean that on startup it's going to idle right up there as well? Idea with the cruise would be to be able to manually select a higher RPM for winching but let it stay just slightly elevated for warmup.

Yes, for that, I disconnected it from the startup and put it on the switch, When my oil pressure was good, then I'd flip the switch for better warm up. Your idea may work, but the solenoid there is easy.

I'll give it a shot and report back once it's not freezing outside...
