Question Re: Symptoms of bad glow plugs

The glow plug indicator light on my 07 LBZ remains lit for what seems like an abnormally long time (~35 seconds with an ambient temp of 50 F) before going out. This truck is quite new to me and when I purchased it the glow plug light turned off almost instantly after the ignition key was turned to the on position.

When the key is turned to the on position, I think I can hear a faint crackling sound behind the shroud and in the vicinity of the steering column. This makes me wonder if the crackling sound I'm hearing may be an intermittent short in a relay.

I would be interested in anyone's thoughts about the length of time my glow plug light is remaining on and, if it's abnormal, what might be the cause. I've checked the engine codes and none indicate a problem with the glow plugs.

The crackling whizz sound you hear might be the HVAC blend doors opening or closing, mine does it on startup and shutdown. Do you have a CEL on the cluster, my glow plug light has never illuminated for more than 5-10 seconds.

c20elephant, my CEL is on and I have posted the codes recently (you responded to one of the posts with advice). The codes were:

Code: U1300 Modules: DRR, EBCM, ECM/PCM, HVAC Control Module, IPC, Radio, RWSCM, CDX, RSA, RSE, SDM, TCM, Theft Deterrent Description: Class 2 Data Link Low

Code: U1026 Modules: BCM, EBCM, ECM/PCM, IPC, RWSCM, SDM, TCM Description: Lost Communications With Transfer Case Shift Control Module (TCSCM)

Code: U1041 Modules: BCM, DDM, ECM/PCM, SDM, TCM Description: Lost Communications With Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM)

I checked the connections on my transfer case and they seem good. Could any of the other codes affect the time it takes for my glow plug light to go out? I've cleared the codes and they returned quickly.

Finally, when driving at night I've noticed the dash light briefly brightening and then dimming to a normal level. I wonder if any of the codes I have might relate to that issue. Thanks.

How old are your batteries? You have an electrical issue. Check your ground connections. I have a feeling your glow plug light issue is connected to it. To me it sounds like you have old/weak batteries.

When I purchased the pickup, it had batteries of different ages, with one likely more than 3 years old. I replaced the oldest with an Interstate MTP-78 that matched the remaining battery that was two years old. Afterwards my local mechanic said that the engine code indicated a bad glow plug and I had him replace them all.

The glow plug indicator light now goes out in a second or two after I turn the ignition to "on". I also replaced the older Interstate battery that remained in the truck thinking it best to have two of the same vintage and model. Thanks everyone for the advice.
