Temperature affected shifting problems

2001 Chevy Silverado 2500hd, 8.1 5 speed, the transmission has a very inconsistent shifting pattern, sometimes the up shifts are harsh, sometime the down shifts are harsh, sometimes it acts like it in tow haul mode when its not, if I drive on the highway and then get off, the truck will shift very harsh and then smooth out, but Ive noticed that when the trans gets to about 200 degrees then there really is no issues. im confused at this point and been fighting it for a year. it almost acts like it looses it shifting memory idk???!!!
