700r4 problem

My son just called and said that our '83 K20 will rev high in first gear, and then slam into gear when it finally does shift.

I told him to limp it home until I can drive it and get a better feel for what is going on.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look first?

Thanks,

Bud

Of course the first thing to check is the fluid level- and to see if it is burnt. Low fluid level will cause the problem you are describing.

I drove it today.

It slips in every gear, and feels like it goes in and out of neutral. The fluid level is fine, and it is nice and red.

Not good, if the cable is adjusted correctly you have internal issues

The 700r4 [4l60] in my 91 [jasper reman] did the same thing after it got about 6000 miles on it. I did the pressure tests on it and they were all low. The pump was obviously bad but jasper wouldn't warrenty it. I guess it is normal to not shift out of 1st untill 3000 rpm.The local stealer checked it out and said it was fine. It eventally led to slipping in all gears and then lost od. I didn't think the truck was worth sticking another $1800 into for another transmission so I junked it.
I'd do a pressure test. The pump may be shot.

Could also be a sticking pressure regulator valve. How about reverse?

Reverse works, but you can feel it jolt into gear when you shift from Park to Reverse and Neutral to Drive.
