They walk among us

On an RV forum I am on, a guy posted up that he accidentally left his Fiat 500 in first gear when he towed it behind his RV. He said he got up to 50-55mph for a "few miles" before he heard a loud metallic sound coming from the rear of the coach. He pulled over and realized what he did.

Now he's wearing out the forum trying to get someone to tell him that he just needs to change the oil to be ok. There are 5 pages of guys saying he destroyed the engine and he keeps responding with things like "I checked at the wheel all turn free" and "there was no smoke" and (my favorite) "I immediately checked the tires on the 500 and they were all warn, but not hot". You got all the vital bits of your engine laying in the oil pan and your first thought was to check how warm the tires were?

He said last night that he took it to the dealer. He is hoping that its just a bad starter (not even a click when he tries). Nobody has been able to explain to him that the starter has nothing to do with this.

And we let these people drive a 20k+ motorhome around?

Tim

I would suspect that to be a troll posting to ignite the RV forum audience

I would agree... except this guy has been on the forum for a while. I remember his post last year about whats the best car to tow "4 down" (all 4 wheels on the ground). He was looking hard at a jeep, but wound up with the Fiat 500.

The guy posted up pictures of the carnage...

I think its gonna take a wee bit more than an oil change and a new starter. Apparently the trans is shot too, but no pictures. Bill for repairs is upwards of $13K. At least the tires all rolled free and were not hot...

I gotta say, to me that carnage is not what I would expect to see from a not running engine potentially spinning a bazillion RPMs.

It is very strange to me that two cylinders would have damage from something metal coming in the intake tract and bouncing around in the combustion chamber

Seems extremely odd to suck an exhaust valve when said exhaust valve is NOT hot.

Finally 13k or close to it seems like an excessive amount for a 4 banger long block and a manual trans and labor. I looked up a new long block and trans can be had for roughly $4500 and $2500 respectively.

Assuming the clutch didn't slip, I would have expected to see valve marks in all the pistons as the valves started to float and maybe some rods windowing the block as the RPMs continued to climb. I dunno, just my wild guess.

Bottom line, I think OkD nailed it.
