Fuel Problem ?

Hi,

My 2004 gmc for some reason will stop running when the fuel gauge is just under a quarter of a tank or so. This just started about a week ago. I have to get out of the truck and prime by hand the filter pump then I can get it to run for maybe 5 minutes maybe more and maybe less. Last night I had to do it four times to get home. If I add fuel to the truck and keep atleast a half tank then I have no problems.
I have looked for leaks and have found none.
Has any one else had this problem ?

Thanks
Shade33.

is it stock or do you have a lift pump? some lifts pumps require a new tube.

Is it getting rusty?

I just had one that had the supply line rotted through.

It's either that or something in the suction line inside the tank.

Also at the base of the pickup is a small "log" with a restricted hole that injects fuel back into to the cup to keep it full. If this is gone it can do this.

FYI a FASS or AD will make this worse.

Sounds to me like with lower fuel levels you are sucking air. It is very hard to find a leak on these, as it is generally sucking air as opposed to pissing fuel.

Well the first thing is changed the filter and it's been about 7,000 miles. I added 5 gallons of fuel and it seems to be running well, but I have not got it down below a quarter of a tank. I am hoping that the filter was the problem. I cut it open and it had a tiny bit of rust in it that I hope came from a tank of fuel that I picked up. There was no water in it so today I am going to give it a test. I will be bringing with me 5 gallons just to make sure.

Thanks for all the help and I will report back.

Just an FYI, I have many 5gal cans and yellow/red plastic Jerry cans. Make sure the can is clean before adding fuel, and rotate it so water doesn't separate.
