Curious why everyone seemed to shift away from propane? Is it cost prohibitive, or un reliable or what? Seems some big names have stopped making the kits. I have been considering adding propane to my stock 03. So what's the scoop?
I have had alot less interest in my propane kits the last several years. Not sure if it is because it steadily grew more expensive over the years or what. It is cheap now if you buy in bulk, alot is coming from the shale gas. It is currently 60c/gallon on NYMEX. If you bought a delivery truckload you should be around $1. I bought 3000 gallons 2 1/2 years ago when it was 70c NYMEX for $1 delivered. At that price, it drops my Dmax cost/mile from 16c/mile to 8c.
I converted my Dmax back from CNG to propane a year ago. With electronic control I can still average over 100 mpg on diesel while doing 14 mpg on lp. Bulk propane is now under 70c/gal. That has me at 5c/mi for lp and 2.5c/mi for diesel fuel for a total of 7.5c/mi. All diesel at $2.35 and 18 mpg is 13c/mi. Still good savings.
I added propane to my now non stock 03 about a year ago now. Went with a cheap kit from Amazon. Paid with hotel points so the kit was essentially free, just to try it. I'm running a pretty low substitution rate around 30%. Highway average 29.5 mpg diesel and around 70 mpg propane, but propane mileage is hard to figure because of venting the tank during fill up. I really enjoy getting over 1100 miles on a tank of diesel.
I ran a PS 2000 on my truck for a few years. I lost interest in it and it's been sitting in my garage ever since. I used it for more power and it did that, it added just over 30hp to the wheels.
If anyone it interested in it pm and make me an offer.
