I have access to propane for under $2/gallon, and have been thinking of installing an injection kit on my truck. With diesel at $4/gallon, I believe propane is a cheaper source of fuel. I'm not looking to use huge amounts of propane, but any amount of diesel I can displace is a savings.
Are there any reasons that all of the propane kits have disappeared from the market, other than propane at $4/gallon is not feasible?
I have read many articles about the pros/cons, and how it will melt my motor, but so will too much diesel........ I believe it's all about moderation as far as motor damage goes.
if i remember right, when marc was on this forum, he said you need to get your propane at 2/3 the cost of #2 to make any savings.
I know there was a guy on ebay selling a kit as I purchased one, but never got round to fully installing it. I know superchips/MSD had one of the best kits out there, but it's faded away like a lot of propane kits. I don't think they offer product support on it now either.
to be honest, you need to maximize the efficiency of your truck then few mods to the engine/tune to optimize that then I would look at the water meth injection to help boost your mpg as the boost juice is available everywhere unlike propane.
if your really bothered about diesel prices and your truck, you really need to start thinking " do I really need a truck "
Propane used to be used mainly for it's power benefits, moreso than it's fuel economy benefits. Given the power advancements of the last 10 (Heck, even 5) years, that's the reason propane has faded away.
It would be interesting to see how it would work out on the newer trucks from a fuel economy standpoint though, but it would really need a guinea pig to be that person to do the testing.
I still sell propane systems, although the CNG systems pretty well took over several years ago. Propane is coming back, because the price has dropped alot in the last six months. I bought 3000 gallons back in July for $1.00/gal. Two months before, it was $2/gal. There is alot of propane in shale gas, and alot is coming onto the market. $1 propane is equivalent to $1.40/GGE for natural gas, and the upfront cost is much lower. The injection system is cheaper, and the tanks are alot cheaper. Plus, you can carry much more since lp is liquified, so range is better and still have more space left over.
