When is GM going to put a duramax/alli. in a suburban. Seems like the perfect combo ever for a hunting/rec. rig. Any thoughts?

Sorry but from what i have read the Suburban body stile will not let the Allison Trans fit. So it will be 2007 or 2008 B4 the body change. Edited by: Snow_Dog

GM is working on some new transmissions to put behind a de-tuned duramax for use in their G-van sieries. So it would not suprise me to eventually see them in the suburban.

I have heard rumors that GM is going to have a V6 Duramax that is 5.0L. It could be used ahead of the 4L80 trans in the existing 'burb/Avalance platform. Probably '06 before we see it, if it happens at all.

Re: duramax suburban?

Couldn't you just use a 2" body lift, just like the HD's have....then the Alli would fit? The truck would look a bit strange, but nerf bars or runningboards would solve that.

Someone else posted pics of a custom DMax Alli Suburban that was on ebay a little while ago....it had a body lift.

Re: Duramax suburban?

I think GM is missing a big opportunity here, IMHO. Jeep is putting a I4 common rail diesel in the Liberity. 22 city 27 hgwy. A V6 DMAX would be VERY appropriat NOW!! NOT in two or three years! I don't understand why the V6 isn't already in production. Oh yeah, they had to redesign the top half of the 6.6 DMAX and design a new 8.1 DMAX or 8.4 or whatever! Yah! we needed a bigger more powerful DMAX cause the 6.6 wasn't powerful enough for the big trucks? What a bunch of cr p! WAKE UP GENERAL MOTORS!!!!!! Fuel costs a bunch and it ain't gett'n cheaper! We need power AND economy! I guess I will be trading the old blazer in for a Jeep for the daily driver.

Duramax Suburban

I'm looking to re-engine my Quadrasteer Yukon XL with the Duramax/Allison combo soon. The swap is relatively easy to do for those few out there who have done it before. Easier to start with a Suburban/Yukon 3/4-ton 2500 with the 8.1L gasser front clip and it's existing drive-by-wire set-up. This is necessary to accomodate the Duramax's radiator and associated plumbing. Hydroboost brakes are also a must. Yes, the 2" lift is incorporated, but it is pretty sano. Install looks factory from the samples I have seen. The set-up needs a custom driveshaft, but that is a straight forward job.

At this past year's Auto Show, the GM Truck reps said "they knew of one Diesel Suburban running around the testing grounds", but they had packaging problems getting the Duramax/Allison combo to fit.

I don't know why GM has insisted the Suburban/Yukon did not have the room for the swap, they could have done it. I think the bean counters slammed the idea. A Diesel Suburban/Yukon XL would have probably been considered a passenger vehicle, not utility vehicle. The GM Suits probably didn't want to blow out their emmissions totals for passenger vehicles, and that the EPA would lump the Diesel Suburban/Yukon in with the rest of the passenger car line-up. The fines would have been an issue. That's probably why they are waiting to release a diesel SUV, once the new diesel fuel reformulation goes into effect in 2006.

I for one plan to swap my 6.0L gasser out for the Duramax/Allison by years end. The 6.0L swap is possible, but takes more work and parts to complete. I want to keep my Quadrasteer, as long as she can take the diesel's power. I'm still trying to determine is it will. If not, I may sell it and start the project with a new 8.1L rig.

-P.
