I got in my truck to go to lunch on Friday and I did not leave the parking space right away and noticed white smoke coming from the back to the front of the truck. Turned off my truck and I went the back of the truck and white smoke was coming out of the tailpipe. GREAT MY TRUCK JUST BLEW UP!!!! (This was going thru my head -blown engine - bad injector, what was it it). Opened the hood and the infamous hose that connects ontop of the compressor and goes across the altenator to the condenser was leaking R134 out and was being sucked up by the AFE Stage II intake. I was releaved it wasn't anything inside the motor doing this. So the hose was $190 bucks and I vacuumed the system out and put back in three can of R134 and one can of oil but it does not seem to cool like before. I had gauges on Hi and Low side and the low side read 65 PSI of pressure at 95 degree outside tempature. Did I put too much in, the amount I put back in was 39 oz of R134 (3 - 13 oz cans)????? Should I back the pressure down to 55 PSI and see if it cools better. I think I have heard that you overfill a R134 system it will not work as good.

I think that was too much. The spec calls for 1.8 lbs but some are putting in 1.6 per a GM bullitten and having better results. I just had a compressor put on under warrenty and they put 1.6 lbs(26oz) in. My pressures now run 50/250 at 90F. It still doesn't cool as good as my wife's Denali though and it runs at the same pressures.

Question, did you evacuate the system first, and leave it for at least an hour at 25 inches of vacuum or more?? Mine started cooling better when the level was dropped per the bulletin mentioned above.

I did vacuumed the system first and it held 28/29 PSI for about 20 minutes.

My sticker under the hood calls for a 1.6 lb charge. My build date was 12/03 and I think that is what the TSB called for. GM has run a critical charge set-up (CCOT), for the last 20 years, if not longer. They don't build the units like Chrysler or Ford, who normally uses TXV's.
So they tend to be real picky on charge.

Over 3/4 ton what?
Can's of R134a. I was answering the "how much can it hold" as a weight question and not as intended. I was in a sarcastic mood and couldn't resist.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
