: Oil and filter questions - please excuse stupidity
Firescooby 08-31-2006, 03:40 PM Just got truck in sig last week.
It's currently got 750 miles and wanna change oil sometime next week around 1000 miles. I've seen mention Rotella, Delo, Delvac, Amsoil, etc. I will probably stick with 5k mile intervals after the first couple of changes.
1- Which would be a better choice here in GA...Delo or Rotella?
2- Always used WIX filters...do they perform ok?
3- Any other info you guys can provide?
Thanks, sorry for the basic questions. I did search, but my search was either way too broad (50 pages) or no matches.
hamsalad 08-31-2006, 04:00 PM You're not stupid...everyone starts with no or limited knowledge and the only way from there is to gain MORE knowledge! You are in the right place!
Delo and Rotella are both good oils. Rotella is in heavy usage by many on the board here. I use Rotella myself, but it is really up to you to decide. If you do a search here, you will find more info on oil than you could ever hope to absorb! Also, synthetic and regular oil are always up for debate. Again, personal preference. Some can justify the extra cost of synth along with why they use it, others can't or don't. As long as you use a diesel-rated oil that is a major brand name with all of the certifications necessary for diesel usage, you will be fine.
WIX filters do a fine job along with Racor (who makes most re-branded filters anyways), Baldwin, LuberFiner and of course Delco. Just a few out of many choices.
I use Baldwin for Fuel and Oil filtration and have had no issues in either of my trucks.
hamsalad 08-31-2006, 04:06 PM Oh, don't forget your tranny spin-on filter.
You should use the Allison-branded tranny filters in my opinion, although other companies make one, too. Don't pay more than $10-$12. Do not buy from the dealer as they will charge you 2-3 times that!
OldSoldier 08-31-2006, 06:07 PM Lot of this stuff is personal preference:
1. Rotella, for the truck and boat...the latter works in a real tough environment.
2. Wix is good.
3. I change mine annually or when the DIC says to, which ever comes first.
kaiserrw 08-31-2006, 10:42 PM hamsalad said it. I run Rotella-T also with Baldwin filters all the way except for the Cat filter on the Nictane fuel filter system. Have changed oil & filter in all my vehicles at 5000 mile interval for years and on this one have oil analysis with each change. Presently have 95K miles and analysis indicates the engine should go as long as the Energizer Bunny does. (Also don't forget the magnet that is in the spin-on tran filter. Clean it and put it back in)
Idle_Chatter 08-31-2006, 11:37 PM North Georgia or south Georgia? 15W40 (dino) if it isn't going to get cold, 5W40 (synthetic) Rotella-T if your going to have some cold morning starts. But I've run the synthetic in south Florida in high heat and it works fine there, too. 3 or 5,000 is WAY too soon to change oil. With good oil and a good filter (Wix is fine, but AC Delco PF-2232 can't be beat) you should go at least 7500 miles and 8 0r 9000 is easily done with mucho oil life left.
Heartbeat Hauler 08-31-2006, 11:53 PM It's really is personal preference between the two oils you mentioned, so I would look around town and see which one is most available. YOu will ALWAYS find Rotella while on the road.
I use the Rotella T 15w-40, and if my oil change comes at the right time I'll put Rotella 5w-40 in for winter time....only did that once and didn't notice any difference really. I also stand by the AC Delco PF2232 filter, but Wix has a good rep on this forum. I too use the 5000mile change interval, mostly because it's easy to remember when to do it....you know, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, etc. Also helps with fuel filter change and tire rotation...every other one. :D

FRAM oil filters are JUNK!! Get it off there as soon as possible and put ANYTHING but a FRAM on there! AC Delco Pf-2232 is the best in my opinion, but there are many other good choices like Baldwin, Wix, etc.
NO FRAM!!

wackoTX 09-02-2006, 06:20 PM no no no i just get the oil there!!! i do all maintance myself
Change oil every 5,000 miles. Use either Delo or Rotella oil, Delco PF2232 oil filters, oem Ally. tranny filters, and grease the suspension every change, and ENJOY the truck.
