Well, just got back from Alaska yesterday morning. 4,500+ miles in total. I am in SW Washington, and we went to Haines, AK. Definitely one of the best road trips evers. It was fantastic, albeit long.
So, my average mileage floated around 15mpg up until we left. Once we got there, I sat down one night at went through my fuel receipts and my average jumped up to around 17mpg. I managed to get 18mpg on one tank where the road was fairly flat and I didn't have to do a lot of hill climbing.
I added a canopy before I left, and I had probably 400 lbs of gear added in the bed, plus 4 mountain bikes on a hitch carrier.
I towed a jet sled back home, but I haven't figured the return mileage out yet...
DIC, as always, is off by a couple of mpg, but return trip said I got 15.8 or so.
Truck performed flawlessly. Other than being totally covered in bugs and one dead bird stuck in the grill, I have no complaints. ):h
Oh yes, and the most important thing I learned on this drive: 75% of the trucks towing trailers or fifth wheels we saw were Chevy/GMC. Not joking or picking on Ford/Dodge here, but that is seriously what we saw. I was actually surprised. Next in line was Ford, and we occasionally saw a Dodge, but not regularly. Apparently, DMAX is king. :D
