: He’s dead Jim...

Well... You can say sh_t happens or Murphy's Law rules but the following story is not going to be happy...

Not even two weeks after having had that problem:

http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9594&PN=1

I had a sizeable tow to do (14,000lbs) on the same route I do every time. I allways tow between 12,000 and 16,000 lbs every 2 weeks on a 1200 miles drive there and back.

During the preceeding days, I noticed a few drops of oil comming from under the engine but I tought they were leftovers from the previous problem stuck on the skidplates because the engine oil level was ok.

About halfway in my 600 miles trip while waiting for the ferry, I noticed a somewhat bigger leak than just a few leftover drops. A closer look revealed that it was tranny fluid dripping happilly. Checked the level... About 3 quarts where missing. I stopped a few km later in a garage and added some fluid. In the next major village, I stopped in a diesel shop to have the tranny checked a little. The mechanic said that that it was leaking from the torque converter and would probably get worse. I noticed, while in the pit witch the mechanic, that the vent tube was venting quite alot but didn't make a case out of it. I added 1-2 quarts of tranny fluid and got on my way. I wanted to stop at the next GM Dealership about an hour away. There was about 1/4 left in my fuel tank... more tan enough to continue. Checked the engine oil level and I was ok but "clearer" that usual on the dipstick.

Not even 15 minutes in the 1 hour trip that would have put me to the next GM Deakership, my "Low fuel" signal comes on... That was mighty fast I said to myself. I noticed that my oil pressure was somewhat low. And 5 minutes laters... The engine dies from lack of fuel. The next garage was 25 minutes away. I called them to have them deliver fuel. They got to me but as I was priming my filter, I noticed that fuel was dripping from under as fast as I was priming... Connected the dots toghether... Vented tube venting like an exaust, low oil pressure, clearer didstick reading... = fuel in oil...

I decided to be prudent and left everything there truck and trailer. The closest GM dealership was full and they told me that they could "look" at my truck in 7 to 9 days at best. So I decided to have the truck and 14,000 lbs trailer towed to the dealership I bought my truck from wich was also the final destination of the load I was carrying. That dealer had time for me on the next business day. Almost 700$ and 5 hours later, I was there. It was midnight on a friday so I will have to wait until monday to know a little bit more.

So here you have it. Tranny dripping oil from the convertor and fuel in crankcase dripping from somewhere at the same time. What are the odds of that...

Looked a little on the board for some info. There seems to be a TSB for similar symptoms on the tranny and the fuel in oil could be related to the injectors but it's still early to tell.

Will know a little more tommorow I hope.Edited by: Maxter

Damn! That's a boatload of bad luck to happen at one time. I hope they get you running again and make things right.

At least you are under warranty with the injectors filling your crankcase with fuel.(sounds like what you have described)

How many miles on your rig?

Please let us know how it turns out.

Good luck to you!

Seems that 8 new injectors will be going in. The GM techs had the mechanic reasamble the head to take some readings before sending the new injectors.

Should know a little more about the tranny today. If they have to take it off, I'm going to try to overnight a Suncoast TD Torque Convertor and a Transgo Kit to take advantage of the fact that the tranny is off the truck.

Just got back from the dealership. I just can't believe what I heard. GM ordered tests (fuel return rate level and others). The mechanics is in 10 hours since yesterday just to reasamble and setup the hoses to measure the rate and he hasn't begun the repairs yet. Apparently they (GM) need that to authorize the repairs.

Obviously if it was just a scheduled replacement, they wouldn't need those tests to authorise anything. Maybe GM Canada is not aware of that or ? I'm losing money while the truck is in the shop. From the looks of it it's gonna be there for the whole week. I'm not even in my hometown, I'm 600 miles away from it.

Must be Canadian trucks are exempt from the injector policy? There should be no diag needed to figure out it replacement is needed

I remember reading that the canadian trucks were covered. My VIN also fell within the ranges that were published on this board.

In a previous thread there was some Q/A published and it said to take the truck to the dealer to have it diagnosed but I haven't seen what's writen on the letters that were sent? But 10-12 hours for a test seems to me that they would be better off changing all 8 right away. I wonder who's gonna pay for thoses tests if they (GM) don't authorize the repair... I certaintly didn't authorize them...

I also noticed that all the fuel admision tubelures (that connect on top of the injectors) were corroded around the seating area. Also, the injectors fuel entry point (wrere the tubelures screw) were very dirty, seemed blocked with black/brown stuff. That must be hard to seal at 20,000+ PSI when you put them back on again.

Your dealer is getting ganked by GM sounds like, they only pay 8.0 hours including diagnosis to replace them. I cant understand why they are going down that road....could of had them replaced and truck back by now..

dmaxalliTech: You are right, I even saw the TSB with the 8.0 hours written on it saying that they now allow less time for the diagnostics and revised the time back to 8.0 and that it could be brought down furter.

Don't forget that they have alot of work to do on the tranny AFTER they're finished with the injectors repairs. Both MAJOR problems occured on the same 600 miles run.

duramaxdiesel: Thanks for the offer... I was about 500 km away from Montreal in the east direction en route with my load. I do live in Sherbrooke wich is 1h15 away from Montreal. Email me if you come close to Sherbrooke!

It's official... after 10 hours of tests... GM authorized the repairs for 8 injectors... What a waste of time.

They are removing the tranny as we speak, they think it's comming from the torque converter seal. Another day of waiting...

I sold my transgo kit last week because I wasn't ready to install it and I was lazy to order another one... Sinde they're removing the trannay right away it would have been neat to slip in the kit. The closest kit is 4 days away... too long.
