First post after this site helped me make up my mind to buy a 06 D/M, I love it!
Question is why is the oil change interval on a Cummins ISL 400 HP 15,000 miles and the D/M 3,000 to 5,000 miles? I have been told it's the filter Cummins uses so why isn't there a similar filter available for the D/M?
Also, why is the D/M a V-8 rather than a straight 6 like most large diesels. Is it an American thing?

Duramax "recomended" change interval is not 5k miles. IF you go by the DIC and the maint schedule it is closer to 10K miles unless you tow heavily. Now how many wait that long is another story both for the duramax or Cummins. Most folks (myself included) tend to follow a change interval of close to 5K miles regardless of engine, duramax or cummins.

The safe way to go to extend oil change intervals would be with a remote filter. The you can safely increase the milage numbers.
... Now about the whole Cummins/Duramax question. Well consult my avatar for the answer to that. ):h

What about, "You are what you eat."
Back On Topic, as far as V8 vs. I6 diesel, the V8 is shorter fore and aft, and ususlly revs higher. IIRC.

Cummins is toying with a 8 banger diesel too.
