Hello all, This is my first post. I have been looking at a 94 Blazer 4x4 w/6.5 TD. Anything I should be aware of or problem areas? What kind of miles should I expect to get out of this engine? It has 160 K on it now. What kind of MPG? Injectors or injector pump problems? Glow plug or controller? I have been reading these have EGR and a cat? Is cavitation a concern? Drive train problems? Do these have computers? Sorry about all the questions, but this is a nice rig and would like to get it. Thank you, Nick

I would advise you that once you modify this rig to it's true potential it's really a powerful (350 hp 450 tq) economical (16 mpg or better) rig that can function under stress. It does require you to learn abit about how the factory put it togather and how/why it needs modification in the stock configuration (factory installed power restrictions).

The PMD/FSD is the electronic equivalent of a throttle cable. the '94 is older technology and only requires a paperclip to reset codes but a programmer (tech1, tech2) to set TDC offset, reset the PCM, or change the speedo for gear/ tire size change.

The best way to approach all this is in your spare time and with the anticipation of getting greasy diesel oil all over you.

There's plenty of modifications to do, and maintence too.

At 150,000 you should be at the expected half life engine, but this is subjective to relative condition of the engine.

hey nick, The local paper here had a '97 ext. cab L65 HD K2500 4x4 for $3950. It's a rig. I hope you know your engine is torquier than your axles are rated for on the blazer(10.5 in. ring gear on the k2500 vs. 8.75? on the k1500).Edited by: quantum mechanic

Problem areas: lift pump and PMD problems (controller of injection pump) MPG dependant upon the rear gearing. Boy oh boy, yes this thing's got a computer on it. Your year is the first electronic controlled engine.

Enjoy!

Howdy Nick welcome to the Place,

1st thing spend some time learning to use the search feature a lot of info has been covered before, I posted a thread couple of weeks ago on RPO code look at the sticker in the glove box and use RPO list which will tell you what options your truck came with; then update your signature with what you find so you don't keep having to repost your configuration. It helps to know what you got when we throw an idea of what might be wrong.Edited by: Turbine Doc

Thank you for the inputs. I am waiting to get word if it is an auto or stick. No I don't mind getting dirty. I have 2 diesels now. Are these computers reliable? I bet they are big bucks. Thanks again.

PCMs themselves pretty reliable its the input devices, wiring and driven devices that cause headaches, once you get your ride go thru thr RPOs in the glove box so you know what you have, post them in your sig and we can go from there. get real familiar with PMD/FSD, OPS, and lift pump problems.

Hi nick,

crawl under the truck and check the oil cooler tubing for leaks (eventually remove mutt shield in front, two screws or so only) and for leaking axle seals on the front diff and the transmission.

Also check wheather it already has a remotely mounted FSD module; you're probably better off if it has one.

For the list of codes in the glove box, you can take the list posted here with you and check in advance what you will get.

Hm, maybe check the turbo charger for any leaks. I don't think that they are likely to leaking, but checking that is easy.

Take a look at the rear lower door (at the back of the truck/backdoor) where the hinges are. You might find some rust there.

In case your budget allows, think about getting a more recent one, and think twice about the size. If I'd have to buy now, I'd go for a Suburban rather than a Tahoe.

PS: The shocks may be worn, I replaced mine at 147270 km.

PPS: I'm usually getting about 18.8 mpg, it varies from 17.41 in winter to 20.43 in summer.

They can be had for under $200.
