I just hit 3,000 and Im gonna change my oil. Im gonna start using Mobil 1 Truck&SUV synthetic. The manual says you only need to change oil every 10,000. I think thats crazy. Anyone have any opinions or recommendations as to what else I should do now.
thanks

If you haven't changed your oil since you bought it, do it now. Changing oil at 3K intervals is a gross overkill. There has been a lot posted on extended drains and some have had analysis done. I ran Rotella T synthetic the last couple changes. I ran it 9K each time with a filter change in the middle. It did not use over a pint in this time frame. Later! Frank Edited by: Frank Blum

The diesels hold twice the oil a gasser does, and have bigger filters. They also spin less RPM, and have better piston rings.

I changed at 500mi, and now every 7000mi. The "oil change light" still said 20% remaining.

On the Corvette, yeah every 3,000 or less, but I rev it to 7000rpm, and has a filter the size of a teacup.

im dumb to synthetic oils so dont burn me on this question....What kinda filters do you use with it? anything special? Shouldnt there be a magnet in the filter or somewhwere incase somthing gets in there...if it would, it wouldnt be gettin changed out in a few miles either, how does that work out? also, how much$$$ is synthetic for somthing good?

Thanks!

No special filters or magnets needed for synthetic oil. Later! Frank

AMSOIL 15w-40 synthetic!

Run oil 20,000 miles and only change filter at 10,000 miles in that 20,000 mile interval so every 10,000 miles you change filter and every 20,000 miles you change the oil

What filter are you guys using? How much oil do these things take? I went to the store today and they had mobil 1300 15w-40 in one gallon jugs but didnt have any delvac 1. I just got the truck and have bout 300 miles on it, will change the oil soon...what oil are you guys using?

With an LLY you need CI rated oil. Mobil 1 "Truck and SUV" is the equivalent of Delvac 1, but is in quart bottles. I understand it is now stocked in some WalMarts and other automotive retail outlets. Delvac 1 in the gallon containers is harder to come by, and requires an order with a distributor or maybe at a large truck stop that stocks it.

In a conventional oil, Mobil 1300 is an excellent choice, but in winter you may want the synthetic.

I use Baldwin oil filters, B1441. If you enter "Baldwin" and "B1441" you will see several sources. I purchased a dozen from www.adiesel.com (http://www.adiesel.com)

Or you can just do what I do and visit the "Auto Oil Changers" every 5 or 6 thousand miles and let them do the dirty work, trust me, its worth the 54 bucks it costs not to have to crawl underneath a hot diesel.

Hey jmg343,

I would wait on the switch to synthetic until your piston rings seat in properly. Use the dino oil until you get to 10-15k miles on your odometer.Edited by: MonteMax

I bought some oil yesterday but had not been able to find any oil filter that would work for the duramax at the three places I went to. I finally stopped by Jiffy Lube to see if I could just buy a filter, I was about to pay for it but the guy asked me if I'd just want them to do it, I told them I had my own oil that I had bought earlier so they just used that and subtracted the cost of the oil. They charged me 15 bucks for the filter and the change so add that to the cost of the oil and I think it was a good deal, Maybe ill do this again.

I have always done that with the dealer - I bring in ALL my stuff, filter oil etc, and the only charge me $15.00 labor. For me it worth it to not have to crawl under the rig, and take the used oil to the recycle center.

Besides they even take a sample of my oil for analysis.

Sure, it's a pleasure to work on your own rig and make dure it's done right, but for $15.00 I say - JUST DO IT.
