It's been a good day so far. Air was ok for the dyno, nothing spectacular. Dodge holding the high HP on #2 and drugs. 697 and 738 from the Cummins.

I made 503.6 / 966.8 on #2 and 616.5 / 1155.9 on the bottle. Did not totally clean up so I may try a bit larger jet.

Only three Duramaxes on the rollers today http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif , tons of Dodges and Fords though. It has been a great show so far, I have some good vids and I have met some great people. It's nice to meet the real people.

Tomac did 303.3 full pull this evening and CPMAC has several full pulls too. I can't wait for the drags in the morning. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Hey BMDMAX; I left before you and I get home and see you are already postinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

The weather was great. (At least for June in the Midwest.) Low humidity and 53* morning low and 76* late afternoon high.

Mackin; you ask about hoot? I`ll tell you, he was with us duramax guys all day. He seemed to be having some kind of withdraw about the trucks.

Clint (ATS Diesel) was there did a 304 and change this evening. for the top dog in the duramax. Then Mtomac a foot of so back. All in all a pretty good showing from the Duramax group.

There was a 9:00AM pull with about 170 diesel trucks. Maybe 8-10 Duramax trucks 35 Ford the rest Dodge.

The top 25 from that pull made the evening finals. Either 6 or 7 Duramax made that round. But as always the Cummins powered Dodges won. 1 Ford made the evening show, but ended up beating all the Duramax trucks to finish in 6th place.

The best part of this evenings pull was the top 21 trucks were from 314 in first place to something like 288' in 21st place. with probably 14 trucks in the 296'-305'. (There was no pull off) The Ford had 306'

The Cummins is still winning, they are just not blowing away the field like they did for more then 10 years.

Mtomac pulled this morning, then this evening, and in the morning he will be drag racing. How many others will be doing that? And pull a trailer to and from the show to boot!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Hoot and I hung out together most of the day. He crawled around under my truck. I couldn't keep him out from under the hood. I just don't know about his decision to go with the Dodge. The poor boy is home sick.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

But hoot is a ***** cat! Nice as could be. He plays this tough guy on the INTERNET, but he is not bad at all. If he didn't own a Dodge, I'd let him hang with me againhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

As for the Dyno, I didn't stick around there to much. But as already posted above. That is true. And one of the other Duramax trucks dynoed at something like 463 on #2 and 5 something (I'm thinking 594, but not for sure) on the bottle.

I could not stay for both days, but it was a hoothttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif I mean fun.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Best I could muster today was 13.0 @ 109MPH with a sorry 2.2 60' time. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif I broke out by 9 hundreths in the bracket racing. Track prep and traction was some of the worst I have seen in a while, I guess this Southern boy is used to that nice pavement that does not have to endure the harsh winters. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif Even the 4WD guys were having trouble.

Tomac did great though, multiple 12.2 passes. Heartbeatcanada had a 12.5 pass in his truck. SP33D made a 200ft burnout pass in his truck, smoked the big meats pretty good in 2WD. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif Darren from Garmon's Diesel won the Heads up class, had an 11.03 pass. The Cummins diesel dragster broke into the 8's today at 140MPH. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

It was a fun day anyway and it was pretty cool going to a drag race with ton's of trucks showing up for a change.

There were a few more Dmax's that went up on the rollers today but no 800 HP Durmaxes showed up. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

I watched the video last nite, got ALL the dmax pulls.

All the Dmaxs had toe-in while pulling, even Mike.

Clints had quite a bit too.

The pewter 3500 has unbelievable amount and didn't break.

I need firewire adapter then I can burn DVD of it.

Don't forget in prostreet pulling there were 2 dmax in top 5 or 6.

I had a great time meeting all of u guys, even loco Hoot.

Well I broke the 500 mile mark on way home so now I can start towing and go over 50mph http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.

Muncie was a blast and it was great meeting all of the guys. Will definetly be attending again next year.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

My sled hook was dissappointing. Pulled 288. Truck was not running right and don't know if it was tire selection as well, but the truck had some minor issues. Looking at the video last night, truck was going not bad, then hit a flat spot and sputtered http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Early diagnosis is lack of fuel pressure. I did try different gearing than i am used too, so it's hard to tell what worked for me and what didn't from the amount i changed from last years pulling.

Grasshopper pulled my truck in the rookie class with different tires, more fuel pressure, and different gearing and the truck ran fine. They don't give distances in the rookie class, it just goes by crowd favorite so we have no idea how far, but it looked like it was up close to the 300' mark, past where i pulled http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif. Watched the video of that run and the truck seemed to run fine.

Track was fun. First time racing with a operational tree and time board, so all this was new to me. Did 3 pre race runs and didn't do too bad. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Went into elimination against a big dodge built by garmons, and of coarse lost. I ran a 12.5 @ 108. Definetly need more time at the track to know how much boost to have at the line, as i spun a little too much for my liking. Proudest moment was cutting a .502 light.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Definetly a very busy couple of days, with alot of knowledge absorbed. All in all, though things didn't run as i had expected or hoped, it was alot of fun.

Whats goin on everybody. It was a real blast this weekend meeting everyone. I loved the dragracing, TOMAC has that truck of his dialed in! Heartbeat did real good for his first time with a tree. he cut a .502 light with his 12.5 run. quick like a bunny that guy. WhiteDuramax seriously twisted some metal with his first pull, I got that on tape, gonna try and post it! Looked like it could have been a good 1/4 mile launch! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Chad Made some good smoke from the tires while makin a pass at the track, I thought he was gonna start whippin donuts for us!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Brandon was very consistent with his truck, even though he couldn't hook! But did that truck ever haul ASS. Also very sweet lookin ride. Had a blast guys can't wait to do it all again!

You ain't kidding it was a good time.

I really got a kick out of the street party both Friday night and Saturday night until the donut men showed up (glazed) at Lee's Inn. Must have been 3-4-500 hanging out till 2 or 3 in the morning letting Muncie know they were there.

You guys talk a bout smokey burnouts? Shoot even the locals were showing up with old beater cars. One guy in Crown Vic was in the middle of a major billowing power brake when the cop pulled up wahat looked like inches from his window... WHILE he was burning http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif That would have beed a spectacular photograph http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Cop told him ta git.

hdmax (Mike) was a great to hang with. Razzin me the about the DMax's being up in the top five pullers early on but as we all know.... be carefull how soon you talk http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

My opinion after watching the pulls, the Dodge boys have a lot more experience behind them with setting up their trucks and knowing the turf than the competition. Something about the Fords.. the majority of them don't pull that well which is kinda surprising given it's big work truck intention and more time in pulling. The Dmaxes looked good except for the front ends. I though the big pewter dually was going to do a prayer. The guys that knew what needed to be done kept there fronts pretty much in check but you could see the instability in the front ends. Clint Cannons Dmax looked impressive and had some nice pulls.

I spent the entire time just walking around talking and hanging with just about anybody, taking in the experience. Great time and looking forward to next year. I think I'll make the Sept. CT GTG.

I did take pics that I'll put up when I get around to it. Gotta cut the grass.

I finished 11th in the Street Diesel class, just out of the money with a 303.03' pull. Here's the video. (http://duramaxracing.com/MichealTomac-DuramaxRacing.com-TIM04-SDfinals.mpg) Out of the 14 Duramaxes in the SD class, 6 made it in the top 25 and into the evening finals. There were 68 trucks in the class.

I finished 3rd in the Pro Street class at the strip. I ran a 12.11@112.85 in qualifying chasing down a 12.68@110 Cummins on NOS that redlighted real bad. I also ran 12.22@112.21 and a 12.18@111.78 in eliminations.

BTW, I towed a 15500# 32' enclosed gooseneck trailer with gear, tools, fuel, weights, tires and spare truck inside it to and from the event.

It was good meeting some new friends and seeing some old friends once again. Thanks to everyone that helped get my truck ready to pull and dragrace.Edited by: mtomac

There was no shortage of 03-up Dodges there. A lot of them dragged but not many pulled. I think they are still in development as far as big power is concerned.

By far the worst toe in was on Clint`s ATS truck. But for some reason it came back like nothing was wronghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Hoot and I was more then a little puzzled when we seen it in the night pull. It looked like the toe in was 3-5" on each of the front wheels.

Did anyone else see that?

I've got them all on video, the pewter 3500 was the worst toe-in that I saw.

Mike I knew u said u liked some toe-in but I wasn't sure if it could be a little too much or close to breaking point.

Plus u have a lot more weight up front then the others.

The track had lots of bite for the nite pulls, hence Clint and his bent traction bars.

Mike does your class keep points seperate for drag and pull or are they combined?

I wondered if the have any 'overall' winners, like u 3rd in drag + 11 in pull= top five overall.

Didn't see many of the top pullers dragracing.

I couldnt believe some of the guys pulling that werent running any straps, beefy parts or lowering torsion bars. I looked at Clint's, they were stock components and werent lowered or strapped, same way with the pewter dually. They are lucky theirs held, one other one didnt.

Here's a great post that is being circulated around the forums, originally posted on TDS....

===

Maybe this is the wrong forum for this, but seeing it is a general diesel topic I posted it here.

I was there yesterday for the diesel truck pulls, and I watched a little dyno as well.

I am not ragging on the Powerstroke as I like the Ford truck very much and am thinking strongly about getting one in the next couple years.

But why does the Ford do so poorly in these big diesel pulls? There were about (I did not count them) 35 maybe 40 Ford Powerstroke equipped trucks there. With about 10-12 Duramax and the rest of 172 trucks were Cummins (No big surprise there) The top 25 from the morning pull was to make the main event in the evening.

1 Ford made it and 6 or 7 Duramax. My point is, the Fords nearly all seamed to almost flow down the track. They sounded better and had a real nice pull. But almost every time they fell on there face 20-40 feet before all the other trucks were.

The one that made the main event ended up 6th or 7th with the Cummins taking all the money spots. The top 21 places were within 25 feet of the winner. All of the duramax trucks finished below that one Ford but within a few inches to maybe 10 feet.

I think mtomac was 2 feet behind that Powerstroke. It was a nice truck. And must have been putting down some real good power. He was running 6 38" mudders with I'd guess 10" lift kit.

The ATS Duramax with all there money was only able to beat mtomac by a foot or so.

But to get back to my question. What is the problem? I know super350 claims no Duramax can beat a Powerstroke, I think most of us know that not to be the case. But putting that aside. It can not all be driver. And some of them had good tires. As I stated before, most of the Powerstrokes sounded real smooth.

There was this one Cummins Dodge that sounded near stock and the tires was more for a Sunday drive then a truck pull, He ended up in the money, talk about a sleeper.

I did notice one 6.0L He did not make the cut, but it was very strong running.

When all was said and done, there were more then 20 Cummins broke down, 5 Powerstrokes, and 2 Duramax. So with the number of total entries for each brand that is about right for break downs. Both Duramax trucks that broke ended up with the pinky size tie-rod bending.
Mike Tomac did break, but it was at the end of his morning pull, and it was hitch related, a little welding and all was good, also one of the Duramax trucks had the tie-rod straightened and welded for the main event.
One other thing, there were many Cummins that pulled that were brought in on trailers. Not that it takes away what they can do, Just that is all they are for while most if not all the Powerstroke and Duramax are daily drivers. And in several cases it was Powerstroke and Duramax bringing them Cummins in.

ON EDIT: The dyno proved to much for Powerstroke and Duramax. Well not really but the top numbers were Dodge (IE: Cummins) fuel only top for Cummins was 692, Powerstroke 7.3 441, and Duramax 503. On the Bottle Cummins a little over 700, There were no 7.3 in this one, and Duramax at 616. I do not know the torque of any of them, However I do know that there were several Cummins and at least 2 Duramax with over 1100# on the bottle.

There were dozens more run on the dyno after I left and they are running again today.

If I understand the problem correctly the Fords are limited by the injector system design with the 6.0. It can only push so much fuel per cycle, then it bottoms out.

Or am I wrong?

grasshopper
06-08-2004, 11:24 AM
McRat, you are correct to a degree. The 6L and 7.3L both use the same fuel injection which is hughe ( misspelled) fuel injection. They are oil fired injectors. the 6L Can use pretty much the same injector as the 7.3L. I'm sure swamps can make them smoke! I saw one 6L at muncie that made a sh*t load of smoke, so my best guess is someone already has a set of injectors! And as far as the person at the lees in saying something about ford having something comin down the pike. Well plans for 2007 is a 6.4L twin turbo navistar motor! So I've heard!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

With Ford and Navistar's recent rocky relationship, a story about any engine type or choice 3 years from now is pure conjecture. Since Ford owns Cummins maybe they'll put one of those potato chip engines in it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

I know Ford doesn't own Cummins but I bet they wish they did.

The dude I'm talking about was walking around Lee's Inn parking lot with a Ford Blue Oval T-Shirt reassuring all the Dodge boys that Ford has this secret weapon on the way. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Why do they need it? Don't they already have a great diesel? Their must be some huge developmental costs involved in all this redesign Navistar has been doing as of late. If things don't tighten up for Navistar you could see some tough financial stories in the future.

I have heard/read that Ford will be upping the numbers on the Powerstroke for 2005. The numbers I continue to see are 335 hp, 630-640 torque. We will all know in about 6 weeks regardless.

Maybe this is the secret weapon on the way from Ford

Hoot.... I agree with you totally, the 7.3 was great for ford, although gutless! when the 6L made its debut it has been nothing but nightmares for the the relationship between ford and navistar. navistar has been running the 6L for about three years in other applications before ford got there hands on it! I heard from a lil birdie, That the way navistar had that powertrain setup, Ford found it too expensive to release it for the price of what the trucks were to sell for, hense ford did what they could to cheapin it up. resulting in nightmares. In Febuary of 2004 We began to see here that the 6L's were showing up with a bunch of changes. you can see the the changes at intellidog.com. I don't remember off the top of my head what they were exactly one thing I do remember was about the impelller in the turbo moving to a 13 fin design to aid the egr! Thats about all I know! As far as the 6.4l twin turbo is concerend. It is a navistar motor and be careful cause it is out there. wether ford decides to use it or not? I don't know!http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif

The 7.3 was never gutless! They may not contend with the Cummins or maybe even the Duramax. But they are still a very good engine.

I think Ford should have kept that for the Super Duty lineup, and maybe used a tuned down 6.0L Powerstroke for the now released F-150. The 7.3L Powerstroke could have much more potental then its little side kick 6.0L.

Maybe the 6.4L Powerstroke that is rumored will be a good step forward for Ford.

Well, guys I really had a great time. Muncie was my first diesel truck show, and I can say it was one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever been to. It was cool to meet some of the DP guys. I've always been a dragracing kinda person, but I honestly had more fun watching the pulls the the drag races. I kinda makes me wanna go out and get me an old 01 Dmax and build a pullin/drag truck. I wasn't able to get my truck out on the dragstrip cause the factory allison isn't liking my 35" tires to well. So, maybe once I get the allison reworked I'll be able to come out and play with y'all. So, I just decided to hold it down in the show N shine area, and bring in a 1st place for the Chevy/Gm class. maybe next year I'll be able to put down some good numbers on the dragstrip.

It's great watch BMDMAX, Tomac, and the ats duramax out there beatin up on the ford's and dodges at the dragstrip. I was showing the video to my dad and he couldn't get over how good the duramax trucks do at the dragstrip.

It was fun seeing the Omish in Wisconsin, but it ended up being about 700 miles out of my way, plus Chicago traffic, for what ended up being a wasted day... Glad I went up there though as the new drive belt Eric had just put on was already shredded and I highly doubt it would have made it home. Not sure what caused it, but I have to give Eric hell http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif We think it was due to high revs, time will tell on the new belt I guess. John was kind enough to take the belt off his truck since the first parts run up to the middle of nowhere was the wrong belt.

Stop off didn't go good. Kennedy didn't want it on the dyno with the 6" tip. He didn't have anything to fit over or in the tip and he didn't want the nice shop black... Can't say I blame him as he's got a very nice setup up there. He's got what it takes to really test the products he sells.

I'll have some new numbers in two weeks though. I'm going to the same shop I have ran 100 plus runs at so I'll be able to compare gains or losses with the new toys compared to original runs on the same dyno.

BTW, thanks for the hospitality Eric. Chad,

Sorry it didn't work out. I felt bad about that. Guess I'm going to have to order some 6" flex! Then again, if a guy used a band clamp to attach his tip. OR if the 4" pipe protruded even slightly in it's original shape inside the tip I could have done it.

On the belt, Car Quest apologized for not having it. They said that they would stock (single alt '02) the belt after I helped them narrow down the application listing to the correct unit. Mine jumped ribs on the tensioner when it revvved high and fast at the end of a dyno pull with the Quad tuner (extended rpm limit) loaded. There was a bug in the programming on the dyno that dropped load momentarily and let it flare... Those running dual alts should seriously consider carrying a spare. If you remove the lower alt bolt, you can run the single alt belt w/o issue though...

No big deal. I thought about a band clamp, but worry about it getting stolen... I've seen it happen before and didn't want to take the chance. No dyno shop I've been to is prepared for a 6" tip, but the ones that have diesel days need to because more and more 6" tips are showing up...
