Guys,

I hope somebody has run across this before.

Last night I started the truck and headed home down the interstate. The truck was up to normal temp before I got on the road. As I was coming down the interstate, I saw a couple of 18 wheelers playing leap frog and decided to pass them, just in case they got tangled up. When I acelerated the pilot injection kicked on and off a couple of times, then I got a loud "kack, kack" I backed out of it and when I tried to resume normal speed, I got the same "kack, kack" sound. I coasted into the right lane and made it to my exit. It never died, but just kept making that sound each time I tried to accelerate. Once i got down to city street speed, no more sounds.

It sounded real hard and as if it was on the back side of the motor.

I didn't get any codes/lights, the egt dropped down pretty low, around 4-5 hundred, and the engine shuddered each time it made the noise.

I'll take it to the dealer Monday, but was wondering if anybody has had a similar problem.

Thanks, DougEdited by: mpdlt

It must have been a ghost, I took it to the dealer today, no codes and we test drove it and could not repeat the symptom.

Sounds exactly like what mine was doing on my Muncie trip. It only happened with the 5er on. I found it to be in the 1800-2200 range, truck would really buck and jerk and get that clacking sound like you describe, almost sounds like a spark knock in a gasser. Took the Edge off and it was still there, but less noticable, albiet from less power. I had the Tech-2 with me and it kept throwing a p1229 code for inj 3 driver circuit. The only way I could drive it home was to put the o/d lock out on and keep the rpm's up around 2600. Dunno what its gonna be, but I did find a PI that sounds similer.... Still gotta check into it.. Interesting that it wouldnt do it empty, only with camper on...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Thank goodness somebody else has run into this. Did your's set a hard code or did you just find it by monitoring it with the tech ll as you drove?

Just to the untrained person, mine sounded like something was refusing to cut on, like an electrical overload.

Guys, I got a pm from Dmaxallitech.

It seems the tech line advised him to try star washers under the battery grounds as a fix for this problem. It seems as if the ground may not be holding properly as its installed from the factory, thus the star washers.
